Humans – Episode #2.2

“Episode #2.2” is episode two of season two of Humans.

In the previous episode, “#2.1”, Niska had knocked on the door of the Hawkins family at 4AM. Of all the intelligent Synths, Niska is the least likely one you’d want appearing at your door in the middle of the night – in some ways, she’s the most human, having proven herself willing to kill. However, Niska promises that she’s not there to kill them.

Instead, she wants to actually face justice for murder, as Lauran Hawkins said, and she wants her to help. Only she wants to stand trial for murder, just as a human would. This is quite an important distinction; Niska doesn’t want to be destroyed as a malfunctioning machine, she wants to be tried as an intelligent being in her own right. Winning or losing is, to a degree, irrelevant; simply standing trial for murder will be important for all the Synths who are becoming intelligent. Laura is less than keen on this. Niska wasn’t expecting the Synth intelligence outbreak to be so sporadic. Laura says she will make an enquiry to the Crown Prosecution Service on Niska’s behalf, but the official response is rather odd, which may cause her to change her mind. Mattie goes looking in a junkyard for a scrapped Synth – quite an important one.

Karen and Pete are shopping for beds. They seem to be getting on quite well; Pete has mostly come to terms with Karen being an intelligent Synth.

In California, a scientist working on artificial intelligence, Dr. Morrow, has been shown one of the conscious Synths, and she says she will have to dismantle the intelligent one she has seen. Which she does – after all, Synths are not people. Exactly the point Niska is trying to prove. Morrow wants another to take apart. Her own AI seems to be growing in capability, now it (she?) has new servers.

Hester is asking questions of the man Leo, Max and she have captured – quite aggressively. She does find some information out, but Leo and Max aren’t happy about her methods. Hester is still confused by her intelligence, and ends up having a conversation on write and wrong with Max. Leo is trying to find out who is taking the intelligent Synths.

Anita decides to make a more active role in helping out the owner of the cafe where she ‘works’ – and her real personality is really starting to show.
