Harley Quinn – ‘Til Death Do Us Part

“‘Til Death Do Us Part” is episode one of season one of Harley Quinn.

This animated series opens on a boat and a bunch of people are celebrating the pyramid of money their favourite pastime, robbing the poor, has netted them when Harley Quinn drops in. One asks if they are really going to be afraid of the Joker’s girlfriend. So, she kneecaps him and tells him he will go into shock soon. The others pull out guns and tell Harley she has made a big mistake coming there.

Then the captain removes his face – it’s an actual face, but not his – revealing that it’s the Joker underneath. Harley Quinn is annoyed; he wasn’t supposed to remove the face yet. The Joker keeps on killing everyone which is really upsetting Harley; she wants Gotham to be scared of her. And to join the Legion of Doom. As the Joker’s partner, not a sidekick. Batman drops in at this point and the Joker escapes in a submarine, promising Harley she won’t spend a single night in Gotham.

Jim Gordon calls Harley Quinn a cancer and Batman wants to know why she’s protecting that psychotic clown he treats her like garbage. Because they’re in love. He proposed. The Joker won’t let her spend a single night in Arkham.

Six months later and the Joker still hasn’t been to seen Harley, let alone broken her out. Killer Croc tells her Joker is never coming. She takes it badly. Poison Ivy does agree with the sentiment, though. Another three months pass and Ivy is trying to convince Harley she can do better than the Joker. Harley Quinn says he’s exciting and challenging. Psychotic and he threw her in a vat of chemicals according to Ivy.

Another three months pass and Harley thinks that the Joker has finally come for her. No; it’s Poison Ivy breaking out. Harley has been waiting for the Joker for a year and Poison Ivy is taking her out whether she likes it or not.

Waking up in Poison Ivy’s apartment – to Frank the Plant – and Harley wants to go back to Arkham. The Joker will go crazy with worry when he finds out. It’s all over the news and he hasn’t done anything. Harley thinks something terrible must have happened. Poison Ivy decides Harley needs a diagnosis from the same person who helped her – Harley, back when she was sane.

This results in the two of them going to see the Joker. Who pretends he’s been staying away to keep her safe from Batman and Gordon. Poison Ivy is not pleased that Harley fell for that.

Harley is still convinced that the Joker loves her. Until she discovers who he really has feelings for. When she finally gets it, she finally loses it. Along with her current outfit and hammer.

Definitely not a children’s cartoon. Lots of blood, gore and broken limbs.
