“There’s More Than One of Everything” is episode twenty of season one of Fringe and the season finale.
In the previous episode, “The Road Not Taken”, Nina Sharp was shot as the lift doors opened in her apartment building. She’s now being rushed into hospital.
Olivia is asking Broyles if it’s known who shot Nina. It isn’t. The security guard and doorman in the lobby is dead and Massive Dynamic has made no official statement. Charlie has the security footage from the building. The attackers enter, shoot the night guy and replace him then head upstairs. Six minutes later, Nina Sharp enters. She’s shot as the door opens and one person is doing something when the camera goes out after he says something garbled. Enhancing the speech and running voice recognition reveals it to be David Robert Jones.
Olivia wonders why Jones is wearing bandages whilst the others are wearing masks. Broyles suggests he tried to change his appearance. Their information says Jones is working for William Bell and Olivia wonders why he’d shoot Bell’s number two. Broyles suggests they’re information is wrong. Olivia wants Bell brought in for questioning and, when Broyles is finally able to get a word in edgeways, states that’s what he came in his office to do. His phone rings; Nina Sharp is out of surgery.
Peter arrives at the lab and asks Astrid where Walter is. Neither know where he is, because Walter left with the Observer. Olivia arrives; she needs to talk to Walter. She wonders if Walter left because of what she said to him, about the trials performed on her and other children. Peter understands why she did it and Walter does too. They haven’t found Walter and Peter says he’s probably at the hotel. He isn’t; he’s at a grave as the Observer watches.
David Robert Jones are setting up a piece of equipment on a street as Olivia arrives at the hospital, as Nina Sharp wants to speak to her. Specialists from Massive Dynamic are working on Nina’s arm. Nin says that Bell is not the problem and not the head of a terrorist organisation. Jones was one of their first employees and, when let go, didn’t take it well. After he broke out of jail, he started demanding meetings with Bell. Broyles says Jones is dying from teleporting from the prison, but Nina thinks he plans to kill Bell first.
Nina can’t say where Bell is, because she doesn’t know. She hasn’t seen him in months; their communications have all been digital. She knows speaking to Bell is more than just a professional matter for Olivia and is counting on it. Stop Jones and Nina will arrange a meeting. As to what Jones did to her, he stole an energy cell Bell hid within her arm. What can he do with it? What can’t he. Jones looks to be creating some sort of portal. A lorry comes through, but the portal shuts, cutting it in half. Jones says it’s too thick; the wrong coordinates.
Walter and the Observer are on a beach. The Observer asks Walter if he recognises a coin. It looks similar to the one Walter is thinking of, but the Observer says it’s from another place. There’s more than one of everything. He’s said too much; the Observer isn’t supposed to get involved. He’s taken Walter as far as he can. Does Walter recognise the house? Yes. Does he remember what he has to find? No. Walter must try to remember; there isn’t much time.
Broyles and Nina arrive at the lab to ask Astrid about Walter and if he’s been acting strange. No more than usual. And has he spoken to anyone? Astrid asks if she should be concerned, as does Peter. They’re told Jones is in possession of something Walter may know about and both Broyles and Nina set a search in motion.
Walter is caught on camera; Peter recognises it as being near a beach house they owned. Walter loved the quiet. Peter would rather bring him back himself. Olivia and Charlie have discovered that the truck, and the driver, who is dead, seemed to come out of nowhere. And apparently don’t exist. There’s no record of either.
Peter finds Walter, who says he’s looking for something that might be in the beach house. It’s very important. Unfortunately, Walter can’t remember what it is. In Broyles’ office, Olivia and Charlie are questioning Nina on the truck from nowhere and where it came from. Nina says Olivia already knows, and suspects where William Bell is. Another world.
What Walter wants to find is needed to stop Jones. Pity he can’t remember what it is. And there are surprises.
