Fringe – Over There: Part 2

“Over There: Part 2” is episode twenty-two of season two of Fringe and the season finale.

Peter is on a helicopter; the computer is identifying various points of interest. He’s heading to Liberty Island, now used by the DoD as its HQ.

Walternate is receiving a report from an officer. She says Homeland Security got word of a high-priority individual at the ER of New York General. The individual was him.

AltLiv gets contacted by AltBroyles. There’s an assignment. AltBroyles reports to Walternate that there’s a team on their way as Peter enters his father’s office.

In the previous episode, “Over There: Part 1”, William Bell found Olivia. They are now searching hospitals for Walter, who got shot. Bell doesn’t think Walter has been found yet; he has sources at Homeland. Bell explains that Walternate is the Secretary of Defence; Fringe Division answers to him. They speak to the nurse at reception, then Olivia spots AltLiv and AltCharlie. Olivia heads to find Walter as the alternates find out what bed he’s in and have his data purged. Bell greets them and talks about Fringe Division and how he developed their sidearms. Olivia finds Walter. After he’s convinced it’s her, he gets ready; he’s already healed. Outside, they find Bell in a car. Inside, the alternates find Walter’s bed empty. AltLiv looks at the security footage. And sees herself.

Peter is looking at red dots on a map. Walternate says they are quarantine areas. Because of what that man – Walter – did. There are soft spots in the other universe but in this one the laws of physics turn into mere suggestions in places. Walternate hopes Peter can help. There are breakthroughs in engineering on the other side that this universe hasn’t achieved yet. The schematic Peter looked at is very old tech. It could heal the problems of both worlds. Missing parts have been replaced but it still doesn’t work. Probably a problem with the power source. Walternate has it for Peter to take a look at.

Walternate is told that AltLiv is here; he says to send her in. Peter says she reminds him of someone he knows. Walternate wants to speak to AltLiv privately. She says that Walternate told her that there were invaders from the other side but not that they are them. Walternate claims they are monsters in their skins. They can’t be trusted. Either Walternate is deliberately lying or what Walter did has really turned him against them. AltLiv says that man knew her alternate. Is he from the other side? Walternate explains no; it’s his sone, Peter. Kidnapped 20 years ago by them.

Olivia, Walter and Bell are talking in a KFC. Walter says that without the others, they may not be able to get back. Bell says that Olivia can open a door still. Walter says yes, but only a crack. Bell says they need a doorstop to hold it open. Walter could build one. Olivia has to stop them from squabbling. She will find Peter.

AltLiv drops Peter off at an apartment. She asks what it’s like on the other side. Different. Very similar, but subtly different. He’s looking at a Red Lantern and Red Arrow comic book cover. AltLiv asks what Olivia is like. A lot like AltLiv. But also different.

Walter and Bell are in a car. Walter looks out of a window and wonders if he’s responsible for all this. Bell says yes, he is. The road leads between dead trees and on the horizon is a city almost completely enswathed in amber. Harvard University is next to this. Walter’s lab on this side is there. Bell says Walternate didn’t manage to cross between universes, but the equipment they need should be here. AltBell didn’t work with Walternate; he died in a car crash. Walter is having a go at Bell for making money and removing pieces of his brain. During this they find what they need. Bell answers Walter’s question later, and the answer is not unexpected.

Walternate seems to have a major hate on for Walter and his universe, perhaps justified to a degree given what Walter did. And he’s not telling Peter the whole truth as a result.

There’s a thread leading in to season three and “Olivia”.
