First Wave – Target 117

“Target 117” is episode one of season two of First Wave.

A meteorite falls to Earth and, later, Joshua gives the location it was retrieved to another Gua. She says it was recorded as a small igneous rock meteorite. It isn’t. The meteorite is opened and a Gua sphere is removed from the interior and the consciousness inside is downloaded into a female husk. The other Gua asks if it’s true, if this is Lucas. It is. One of their greatest warriors. And, apparently, Joshua was their teacher. According to him, the pupil has surpassed the master. When Lucas is ready, Joshua gives her briefing materials and she asks if he isn’t happy to see her. He is. The briefing is for Subject 117 – Cade Foster.

Cade is rowing somewhere at night, with his journals giving a bit of a recap. He’s rowing to Cosgrove Island after a man, Harold Shanley, contacted the Paranoid Times, claiming to have escaped from an alien experiment. Cade rings Eddie as he hasn’t found Shanley yet. What does the latest email say? That Shanley was found shelter below the rising sun. Eddie has a newspaper article about Shanley, which says he killed his children. Shanley disappeared three weeks ago. Eddie says he will be agitated, scared and on the run. Cade has a bad feeling. Yes, he has the gun. Cade wants Eddie to check the location of the last email then the call cuts off.

Joshua is telling Lucas that she has a specialised husk, 60% more of their DNA than normal, and therefore greater strength and senses. She asks why not make all the husks like that. Because at those levels, it’s identifiable to human medical procedures if caught. Lucas wants to know if it’s true what they say, that human husks make sex pleasurable. Joshua tells her it’s strictly forbidden unless to further mission objectives.

Cade has found Shanley’s glasses, broken. Eddie is tracing the emails; they didn’t come from Missouri and Nevada as they were supposed to. They came from Cosgrove Island. He tries contacting Cade but can’t get through. Eddie packs a bag, starts heading out, realises he’s forgotten his hat, gets that and forgets the bag. Cade has found a light that could be thought to be the rising sun.

Joshua gives Lucas something of Cade’s that was taken during the original experiment. She sniffs it. Joshua explains that, since his escape, Cade has exposed over 15 experiments and is using a book of prophecy as his guide. He’s become a one-man army, so be careful. Lucas says goodbye as the humans do – with a kiss.

Cade is looking for Shanley and Lucas is looking for him. She sees the light as well, which seems too bright for her. She sniffs the air. When Cade calls out for Shanley, Lucas hears. Cade has found Shanley hiding in a container. He explains who he is and that he’s there to help. Shanley is more than a little paranoid and mentally a mess. He asks why he should trust Cade and Cade explains he was part of an experiment too. Shanley is babbling a little and says he just walked straight out of the facility. Then decides, when Cade mentions aliens, that Cade is an alien. Cade is trying to reassure Shanley, as Lucas is closing in. She punches right through the metal of the container and breaks Shanley’s neck. Cade empties his weapon at her, to essentially no effect.

The experiment isn’t for Lucas to kill Cade, because she could have done that already. Instead, it’s a test of his true warrior potential. In the season one finale, “The Decision”, Joshua convinced the Assembly to vote against Launching the Second Wave. The Guahead has sent Lucas here to give a recommendation on whether or not to launch the Second Wave after all. Lucas, as a personal goal, is flirting with Joshua. Joshua himself appears to have a slightly different aim to the rest of the Gua, though he believes that’s he’s acting in the Gua’s best interest. Meanwhile, Eddie finds Cade, but they are stuck on the island, being hunted by a superior human husk, and Eddie has forgotten his medication too.
