“Still at Large” is episode six of season three of First Wave.
A woman is in a police station at night. She’s not a cop but appears to be an employee. She has a sheaf of files in her arms and pauses to fiddle with a shoe as a security camera sweeps. When it comes back, she’s still playing with her shoe but the file is much thinner. She heads to a desk and uses the computer. Eddie wakes up in his trailer to a chat request. The woman, calling herself ‘Red’, says she’s a clerk at the Chicago PD. She’s been logging into the Paranoid Times and has proof that Cade Foster is innocent. There are police files about Hannah’s murder that aren’t in the official record. She has some and will get the rest tomorrow. She knows aliens exists. Eddie asks about the files and her response is ‘THEY ARE DEAD.’ There’s a sound behind the woman, then someone grabs her from behind and throttles her to death.
Cade is in the police station in disguise. He sees a red-haired woman and says he’s looking for Sgt Chernovsky. The woman is Jordan Radcliffe and she says she’s new here. Jordan knows of a clerk with red hair but she’s not been seen in a couple of days. Jordan says she’s always loved a man in uniform. Cade has always hated them. This is dangerous, but Cade has a couple of things going for him. As Cade and Eddie killed the clone in “The Believers”, the police think he’s dead. And with Jordan he has an ally. If all goes well, they’ll be out in under an hour. Thereby guaranteeing that won’t happen.
Cade is going through some files when an officer approaches, asking what he’s doing. Looking for Chernovsky. He’s Chernovsky. Cade says he’s been transferred over from the 19th. Chernovsky hasn’t heard about it and asks someone else if they know anything. Cade calls Eddie who sets up the files as they’re searched. Cade is marked as being under review and only for clerical work. Chernovsky doesn’t want another paper pusher but is told he can dump Cade on Garvin.
Chernovsky escorts Cade to Homicide; Jordan follows. Cade asks Chernovsky about anyone called Red. Emma; she used to take cops down to the Evidence Room. Used to leave marks, though; liked to dig her fingernails in. Caused trouble at home. Detective Garvin (Ian Tracey) arrives at this point. He thinks Cade looks familiar.
Jordan is searching Emma’s desk. Garvin speaks to Chernovsky, wanting to see the transfer papers, as Cade calls Eddie again, asking him to check on Emma and see if there are any deaths tying into the station. There aren’t. And the personnel records Eddie changed will only fool the cops until someone runs a serious check. Another cop comes over to check what Jordan is doing. Emma has been laid off and she’s been sent to pack her things. Packing is done by the police. Jordan heads out. Cade speaks to her; Garvin thinks he knows him. They head to the file room.
In there, Jordan shows a sheet of paper taken from Emma’s desk. There are scratches on it. Cade starts to shade them. Garvin has called the 18th; no-one there has heard of Cade. Chernovsky wonders if Cade is an IA plant. Garvin plans to find out who Cade really is. Scratched on Emma’s pad are the letters ‘MAB’. Cade think that’s short for Mabus. It would mean there are aliens here. And Jordan was only worried about the cops.
As they leave the file room, Garvin approaches. He hands Cade something to take down to Homicide, then changes his mind after Cade has touched it. Cade realises Garvin has taken his fingerprints. Jordan thinks it’s time to leave. Cade thinks they have a little more time. Meanwhile, someone wearing the same watch as the person who killed Emma rubs the rest of Emma’s pad and also finds the letters.
Jordan wonders why Emma was taking cops into the Evidence Room, given what she was doing. Cade thinks Emma needed an excuse to go in there to look for something. She scratched all the men, too, which means she was checking to see who healed. They head to the Evidence Room too and Cade slips the evidence cop some money, then more to turn the camera off, so he and Jordan can have some private time. Inside the room, Jordan lets go, but Cade grabs her until the camera goes offline. However, they still need to add some sound effects.
Garvin is checking on Cade’s prints and eventually he’s going to get a result back. And will also discover something surprising. Cade and Jordan search the unsolved case files, realising that’s what Emma was referring to when she said they are dead. Hannah’s autopsy is there. Cade also needs to stay longer in the precinct than planned, naturally, which is increasingly dangerous. Especially as the cops are going to discover he isn’t dead – probably what the title is referring to – and there’s a Gua in there as well.
