First Wave – Deepthroat

“Deepthroat” is episode two of season two of First Wave.

At a radio telescope array, the astronomer has detected something just outside the solar system. Emanations from material drawn into a black hole or a wormhole from another galaxy. Wormholes do not have to lead to other galaxies. The images show something being emitted.

The astronomer is on the phone to Eddie, saying he’s detected something that looked like a meteor coming out of a wormhole. Yes, he’s sure, though the National Observatory has no records. NORAD reported a small meteorite entering the atmosphere exactly one week ago. It came from a wormhole to another galaxy. Again, it doesn’t have to be from another galaxy. Eddie tells the man he’s in danger as he’s the only one with a record of this; he thinks Eddie is being paranoid. The astronomer, Miranda, is sending a package to Senator Sterling Preston. Eddie tells Miranda he can’t trust the senator and to send a duplicate to him. Then someone arrives at Miranda’s door. Eddie tells him not to answer; Miranda hangs up, saying he’ll call back shortly. He answers the door and gets shot. Eddie is trying to ring back as the shooter is taking Miranda’s hardcopies and deleting the files. Though they miss the packet being sent to the senator.

Cade is in DC and he approaches Senator Preston in a park after a run. He asks if the senator has received a package from Miranda. No; though he knows the name. Yes; Miranda spoke at the subcommittee on space technology. The senator didn’t approve federal funding to chart the solar system. Cade tells the senator that Miranda was murdered three days ago. He believes Miranda discovered something and paid with his life for it. Did the senator receive a package of photos? Preston doesn’t think so and he goes through his mail personally. Franklin Garver – the senator’s aide – signed for it, but there’s no package. The senator asks for Cade’s name and, if he gets the package, promises to call. A woman is photographing them both.

Cade contacts Eddie, telling him the senator hadn’t received the package. No, he didn’t mention aliens; when has that strategy worked? Eddie says it is working. Cade thinks the senator might know something, but he wouldn’t discuss it with a stranger in a park. Eddie suggests bugging the senator’s office. Cade thinks the Capitol is beyond his talents. The Senate isn’t in session; Eddie meant the senator’s home office in Maryland.

At the Washington Examiner, the woman who took photos wants Cade ID’ing. Then sends a fax of a drawing of a skeleton. Elsewhere, the senator is seeing a woman for some discipline. She whips him and the bloody weals heal. The senator is an alien. The woman continues.

A figure heads to a phone booth. They have a fax of a skeleton. They call the reporter, Samantha Ray, and alter their voice. Samantha says they need to talk; the figure didn’t want to be contacted outside an emergency. Samantha has been digging into Preston, as suggested, but needs more information. The source says to look into space technology. A six-figure research grant to an astronomer. Be careful; they’re all in danger. There’s something out there.

Cade is bugging Preston’s office with audio and video. He asks Eddie if Eddie can see the desk. No; Cade is in the way. Cade moves. Now? No; it’s dark. Cade turns on a light. Now he can. Then Cade has to hide from a patrolling guard.

Samantha is speaking to the wife of the astronomer. The wife is unhappy; the senator gave the dean $2 million on the condition that her husband’s programme be shut down. Another reporter, Vernon, tells Samantha that some NASA guy tried to pop Preston for cutting funding. The senator is shutting down a lot of space related stuff. Samantha asks Vernon if he wants to team up on this. Because she’s discovered who Cade is.

Cade is making himself a fake ID; the bug in Preston’s office hasn’t revealed anything yet. He thinks they’re running out of time. Cade is going to head into Preston’s office. Eddie thinks that’s too risky; Cade should at least disguise himself. Cade has; he’s going as a Republican.

Samantha and Vernon are waiting to see Preston. She’s getting impatient and heads to speak to the aide. He calls the senator, because Samantha is going to be problematic and they get sent in. Then Cade arrives; he wants to see the senator too. Samantha and Vernon are in Preston’s office, talking about how the senator is shutting down space funding. Cade is outside, trying to contact the senator. Samantha knows who he is. That’s going to cause problems.
