“The Other Side” is episode nine of season two of Extant.
In the previous episode, “Arms and the Humanich”, Molly turned herself in to the GSC after Adhu’s death from the virus as she, too, was dying. Nate is working on her with two others, trying to find some way of curing her. Toby and Secretary Stanton are looking on; she wants to know how many hybrids survived. Toby knows what to do.
He enters Molly’s room and says he wants to ask questions. Molly tells him the hybrids aren’t the enemy. Toby can’t take that on faith. Molly doesn’t think much of him turning the Humanichs into killing machines. Soldiers to win a war, according to Toby. Molly says the hybrids want peace. Well, some clearly don’t, and Adhu did warn Molly about Ares – and Terra. Molly thinks humans aren’t worth saving and wants Toby to admit he killed John. He says he didn’t have anything to do with John’s death. She doesn’t believe him. He may be telling the truth. Toby wants answers. Molly wants something first.
Charlie and Julie are telling Stanton that Lucy attacked Julie when she overheard she was going to be shut down. Stanton thinks that’s natural. Charlie says it’s against the protocols and calls into question the safety of any other Humanichs with her operating system and suspend the activation of others. Looks like they did see the problem. Stanton thinks that’s just a glitch. So, fix it. Likely not the right decision. Charlie and Julie are heading to install the limiters into the other Humanichs when Toby tells them that Molly is dying and her final wish is to see Ethan.
Nate and the other two have the hybrid bodies and plan to see if they can find a cure. One of the bodies is Terra. But is she really dead? Adhu gave the impression she wasn’t. Molly is recording a video log for Ethan when she gets swept into a hallucination of being at the fair with her father.
JD is brought to see Toby; Molly turned herself in in exchange for his release. They’re doing all they can for Molly. Toby wants to know about the hybrids; JD wants to see Molly first.
Ethan is talking to Julie; he doesn’t want to hurt anyone ever again. Julie says he won’t; he has humanity. Don’t the others? Julie doesn’t think so. She explains that she changed his memory function to try and keep away Ethan’s pain at losing his parents. But Molly is very sick, because there are parts of the hybrids inside her, and she may not get better. She wants to see Ethan. Ethan would like that. But first, there’s something they need to do. Which is restore Ethan’s memories of Molly and John.
Nate is saying they are going to start on the body of Terra when one of the others, Tommy, suddenly decides he’s hungry. But, did he decide that himself? Or was he influenced?
Molly’s vision of herself at the fair with her father is as a child. She sees Julie, Charlie and Ethan as well, then more familiar faces. There may be a meaning in the hallucination.
With Adhu dead, Ares may well be the lead hybrid. And Ares is perfectly willing to kill humans. All of them. Which leads to some potentially unfortunate consequences.
