Extant – Don’t Shoot the Messenger

“Don’t Shoot the Messenger” is episode ten of season two of Extant.

In the previous episode, “The Other Side”, Molly died. Yet she’s still at the fair, and looking at a necklace. The fair is empty of everyone but JD. Who has been shot in the stomach. Apparently by Molly. Molly jerks back to life, aged from the virus.

Hybrids had invaded the GSC and the building is being evacuated. JD and Toby get stuck in a lift. Julie and Ethan are leaving, but Ethan runs back in and heads back to Molly. Julie runs after. JD uses Toby’s tie to set off the smo0ke detector and they get out of the lift. Toby explains that Humanichs are in the building, with shoot to kill orders, and virus containment has been breached. JD heads back for Molly.

Julie sees Lucy on a lift monitor and hides. Molly is peeling of her aged skin and pulling out her grey hair. She calls for help getting out, then her eyes glow and she sees Terra setting charges. Ethan arrives and overrides the security. He knew she’d come back. From where? She died. JD arrives and says they have to get out. The place is going to be blown up.

They bump into Nate, who explains that the hybrids are in virus containment; it’s a hostage situation. Humanichs will shoot hybrids on sight. Molly sees what Terra is doing, and bangs on the door for Terra to let her in. The door opens and Molly enters. There are a lot of bombs inside and Terra has the detonator. Toby is there as well, under Terra’s control.

Nate sees Lucy and the Humanichs and stops the lift. Lucy warns him she will have to use force. Nate says Humanichs are forbidden to harm humans. Lucy snaps his neck to prove him wrong.

Molly is talking to Terra, saying they will not win the war Ares is starting. Ares left her there to die. Molly says she shed the last of her old life today. They have to build a future together. Even if Terra believed her, there’s no way out alive. Toby asks what if there was.

JD sees Lucy and he and Ethan run. Toby manages to convince Terra there’s a way out and Molly takes the denotator as Ethan and JD arrive. JD explains the Humanichs are coming. Toby explains how they can leave, gives Molly a phone only he can ring and JD his gun. And asks for JD’s handcuffs. As they head out, Ethan has a flash of Lucy killing Nate. Lucy arrives and releases Toby from JD’s handcuffs. She is following orders from a higher authority than Toby. Then part of the building explodes.

JD takes the others to a safe place. There’s a windup television there; they’re being blamed for the explosion. JD assumes Ares did it. Terra decides that she should go, but Molly convinces her to stay.

At the GSC, Toby is told the intelligence wing was destroyed and four people died in the blast. Plus Nate died of a broken neck. Secretary Stanton says that the hybrids left through the escape tunnels. She wants to know every employee who knew about them.

Stanton speaks to Lucy about Nate. That casualty gives her pause. Lucy explains that Nate was protecting someone and she had to take swift action. So she killed him. Stanton says that’s regrettable, but necessary. Which means she either doesn’t know Humanichs aren’t supposed to harm humans. Or she knows and doesn’t care. Neither possibility is great. Molly isn’t among the dead, so Stanton wants her finding.

Things are getting very complicated. JD wants them to hide until things are over. It might not be that simple. And the name of the man who Toby said was John’s enemy, Nicholas Calderon, keeps cropping up.
