“The Witch’s Familiar” is episode two of season nine of the new Doctor Who.
At the end of the previous episode, “The Magician’s Apprentice”, the Doctor was on Skaro, a prisoner of Davros and the Daleks. The Daleks had killed Missy and Clara, and destroyed the TARDIS. Finally, the Doctor is seen back with the young Davros in the hand mine field, pointing a Dalek weapon at him, presumably going to kill him to save the others.
This episode opens with Clara tied upside down and Missy monologuing at her about the Doctor. This speech serves a purpose, as it explains why they aren’t dead. Otherwise that would be a bit unclear. The two then have to make their way back into the city. The Doctor and Davros spend much of the episode talking, as Davros’ life comes to a close.
The music unfortunately is a bit on the loud side, drowning out some of the dialogue. Missy embodies a cross between the craziest Doctors and Anthony Ainley’s portrayal of the Master.
