Continuum – Wasting Time

“Wasting Time” is episode three of season one of Continuum.

In the previous episode, “Fast Times”, Liber8’s attempt to return to the future (with the exception of Kellog) failed, leaving them, and Kiera, stuck in 2012. Alec had given Kiera a deep cover showing that she was a Federal agent, and she has been asked to work with the Vancouver police in a newly-setup taskforce intended to stop Liber8. Who they think are just a gang. The police also have a fragment of the time travel device, meaning that Liber8 can’t attempt to return again without getting it back. This episode again starts off in the future, with Kiera and some other Protectors entering a building that has some Liber8 graffiti. They are after some former soldiers who are now members of Liber8. The enhancements soldiers get make them a little – erratic.

Back in the present (or past?) and Cameron, in her guise as a Special Agent, is giving a briefing to the taskforce on the abilities of the Liber8 members. Skipping the bit where they are from the future, and some of their abilities of course. Because those abilities are beyond what is currently possible. She also mentions Edouard Kagame as the leader of the cell, but says he hasn’t been seen. The other members of Liber8 said he didn’t make it – not to Cameron of course – so is he here or not? The cell itself is having problems, because the current leader, Travis (Roger Cross), is seriously injured, and if he dies there will be a power struggle.

Kiera is in a coffee shop being instructed by Alec over her communicator on how to open a box and wear a Bluetooth headset. So that she no longer looks crazy when she’s talking to him. Or, as everyone else thinks, herself. Then she is approached by Kellog. Kellog says he doesn’t really approve of his associates use of violence, being a simple con man and social engineer, and wants Kiera’s help. He wants to stay in 2012, because he likes it here. When Carlos arrives, Kellog leaves. They have got bodies in the morgue missing their pituitary gland – the Liber8 medic Sonya is removing them and killing the people in the process (not that they know that for sure yet). She’s a medic, so perhaps she’s harvesting them for human growth hormone in order to help Travis, and perhaps the others too.

Alec has his own problems. His step-father seems to be a bit of an anti-technology nut. Which is pretty much the opposite to him. (Alec’s step-brother is played by Richard Harmon, who plays John Murphy in The 100.) Liber8 are planning to set Cameron up. Or at least one of them is, in order to give them a benefit in any potential power struggle inside the cell.
