“Split Second” is episode two of season two of Continuum.
In the previous episode, “Second Chances”, Kiera agreed to work with the police again, but as her own agent. That way she can operate more freely and Carlos and his boss have plausible deniability. Liber8 assassinated the mayor so that they could put their own man up as a candidate, a man who has seemed to become less honest rather rapidly. Agent Gardener is trying to find out who Kiera really is – she told him the truth because of course that sounds like a lie – and has had Julian and Travis put in prison together. Older Alec sent a message to his younger self – it seems that he isn’t happy with the future and considers himself partly responsible. So he wants to change it. Young Alec has stopped avoiding Kiera.
This episode opens, as always to date, in the future, with Travis getting some technology implanted, including a CMR. Sonya Valentine seems to be the one in charge of this, a programme designed to make enhanced soldiers. However, although her boss is impressed, he says the programme is too expensive and is being terminated. All the enhanced soldiers will also be terminated. Sonya says she will terminate Travis herself. Then she injects him with something before kissing him.
In the present (past?) Lucas is looking at footage of Sonya in the hospital with Travis. He figures out that Sonya shot Travis. Lucas knows that Garza will not be happy if she sees it, but he seems to be on Valentine’s side. Garza is getting impatient to try and break Travis out. In prison, Julian is being approached by someone who is willing to offer him protection, because he seems to agree with Liber8’s aims, but Julian already has protection from Travis. When the man takes Travis’ reaction badly and comes back with friends, it goes badly for him and his friends.
Kiera is checking up on Alec as to his new job. She’s also concerned that Alec may destroy her future, so that she won’t be able to get back. He points out that she already did something that could have changed the future when she tried to stop the bombing in “Endtime”.
Gardener is still concerned about Cameron and Section Six. The man who warned them off, Escher, is the CEO of a corporation, one that exists in the future. His boss lets him continue with an investigation, quietly. He is officially assigned to the Liber8 taskforce – Gardener is sure Cameron is connected to Liber8. She is, but not in the way he thinks.
At his new job Alec is improving the company’s software. This is not well received by his boss. After which he is approached by Kellog – who offers him a job. Alec also wants to know what future Alec will be like. Kellog says really, really rich.
Sonya is planning to take Travis out of the picture – not necessarily by killing him – and away from Julian. Or Theseus as he seems to be known in the future. Although this may be made to look like a rescue.
