“Final Hour” is episode six of season four of Continuum and the season and series finale.
In the previous episode, “The Desperate Hours”, Carlos had arrested Kellog using evidence that Dillon gave him that connected Kellog to Escher’s murder in “Minute Man”. Brad, and three of the other future soldiers had come to the police station to rescue Kellog. The future soldiers killed and injured a lot of cops; one in particular was using a future weapon, although oddly not the powered armour. Kellog was ‘rescued’ – he didn’t really want to be, as he doesn’t want to become a kidney donor for Future Kellog – and a lot more of the police could have died, including Carlos. This was only prevented because Kiera freed Travis, who decided to sacrifice himself to take out the most heavily armed and armoured future soldier, allowing everyone else still alive time to get clear. Carlos has, not really unsurprisingly, had enough now, and wants to know where the future soldiers are so that they can finally take them down.
This episode opens outside the precinct where Carlos and Kiera are talking. The assault on the future soldiers base in being geared up, but Kiera wants a head start first. Alec still isn’t sure that he can send Kiera forward in time, or even which future she will end up in if he does, but she is willing to risk it to see her son again.
Back at the future soldiers base, Brad hands over the key he took from Alec. When Zorin inserts it into the machine it fires up. They will only have 90 minutes to get everyone through once it’s activated. They activate it, and some people come through. However, something goes wrong, and the portal has to be shut down; several people die as a result. Alec has done something to the key, and time is still counting down. The longer they wait, the more of their people will die, and if it takes too long, only their enemies will be coming through. It seems that Brad has been kept in the dark about this being an invasion, not simply an escape.
At Alec’s, Jason is taking one of the time devices, whilst at Piron, Curtis is taking the other – Kellog seemed to be getting Alec to reprogram that one too (without Alec’s knowledge) at the same time as he did the one Jason now has.
Kellog is feeling a little unfulfilled with his life at the moment. He also feels like a prisoner; Zorin says that he is being kept for his own safety. Because the two times are now tethered, if anything happens to Present Kellog, it will also affect Future Kellog. Which could cause paradoxes. He is also chatting to Vasquez, trying to get her to choose him over Future Kellog. She obviously cares for Kellog, but she turns him down. So Present Kellog kills her, and you can guess before she even says it that he’s her father.
Carlos has got Kiera a 30 minute head start before the final assault and he says, despite all the problems she’s caused, he’s going to miss her. Before they leave, Dillon wants to know what is going on and wants to help. In the previous episode, Carlos had told Dillon that they were from the future. Naturally, it sounded utterly unbelievable – a good way of lying can be to tell the truth. Kiera doesn’t just tell Dillon; she shows him some of her future tech. Jason brings the time device to Alec but he doesn’t want to go back to their future with her.
There is also a serious problem with Carlos’ attack on the facility. Jason points out to him that the device is essentially an antimatter fusion bomb which could take out half the city – something that didn’t crop up in “Power Hour” but really should have. Garza, who disappeared after Lucas’ death following that infiltration of the facility, also shows up again.
It all gets very messy as a firefight between multiple factions breaks out in the facility, and the future soldiers still have a suit of powered armour and more advanced weaponry.
So, Kellog is making deals with Curtis and with Kiera. He’s quite obviously after something himself. Will the Traveller manage to fix whatever he broke? What will happen to the people from Future Kellog’s time, including him? What will happen to Present Kellog? Can he be trusted at all? Will Kiera get back to her family? What side will Brad end up picking? What will happen to Alec and Carlos and their time? Might Alec finally get back with Emily?
