“The Living Legend Part II” is episode thirteen of season one of the classic series of Battlestar Galactica.
In the previous episode, “The Living Legend”, the arrival of the Pegasus caused the Cylons to retreat. Afterwards, Adama asks Caine if his Vipers can land on the Pegasus, as it will take time to repair the landing bays. Caine wants to come across to speak to Adama.
With three base ships and four squadrons based out of Gamoray, they can’t let the Cylons launch a combined assault. Caine wants to knock out the base at Gamoray. He says they can do it without losing lives; two battlestars will overwhelm the defences and the anti-assault batteries can be neutralised with a small team. Adama says they can’t take and keep the base; only take the fuel. Caine suggests deploying the Pegasus to lead the Cylons away after the fuel base is secured.
Adama wants to speak to Caine in private. Caine assumes he’s concerned about a repetition of the tanker incident. He is, because Caine’s reputation is based on individual initiative not teamwork. Caine would like to take the base, but seems to agree this isn’t possible with the civilian fleet. One the way back to his ship, Cassiopeia speaks to Caine. He doesn’t want her to come with him as it’s too dangerous.
Apollo, Starbuck and Boomer are getting ready for the ground mission when Sheba and Bojay arrive. They’ve been assigned to help; they’re the only ones who’ve seen the target. Sheba doesn’t think they will come back. Starbuck wants to bet on that. Something personal. Sheba refuses; he wouldn’t want her to throw the mission to avoid losing the bet.
Cassiopeia speaks to Starbuck before they leave. She says Caine isn’t planning on coming back. Starbuck says Caine is a survivor. Cassiopeia says if Caine was expecting to survive, he would have taken her with him. Sheba wants to know as she’s sure her father is planning something crazy. She wants to head back; when orders are mentioned, she says the whole thing was her idea. Cassiopia volunteers as a med tech.
Baltar is told by Lucifer that Gamoray has four squadrons. The equivalent of a base ship. He wants them to prepare for a new attack.
The ground force jumps into Gamoray, just as the Imperious Leader is arriving. They plant explosives to blow the munitions bunkers as a diversion. Bojay gets injured by a Cylon and Starbuck and Boomer head off to take out the anti-assault defences. The bunkers explode just as the Imperious Leader is pompously stating how well the Cylons are doing.
Galactica is getting closer as Boomer and Starbuck blow up the ground defences. Both battlestars launch Vipers. Baltar’s forces are heading in, but fortunately he’s a complete coward and any time he comes under threat backs down even if he might win.
