Babylon 5 – And the Sky Full of Stars

“And the Sky Full of Stars” is episode eight of season one of Babylon 5.

A man coming through customs on the station sees another man waiting, and they appear to acknowledge each other’s existence. They both leave their separate ways though. Sinclair is greeted as he passes by one of the security personnel, and that man, when he turns a corner, is accosted by what appear to be a couple of leg breakers. It seems that he owes someone some money, and he’s given 24 hours to pay. The man who just arrived on the station is in his quarters when the man who was waiting arrives. Their target has been identified – Commander Sinclair – and the second man asks when they are going to take him out.

Sinclair and Garibaldi are talking to the man who was accosted by the legbreakers, Benson. He has only been with the station for six months, and Benson is asked if he knows the rules on gambling. For exceeding the limits could result in Benson being compromised, if he gets into debt with the wrong people. Benson denies doing anything wrong, but he is taken off active duty pending the outcome of an investigation. After Benson departs, Garibaldi says he is lying. Sinclair tells him to find out why.

The two men from earlier are assembling some sort of device and Delenn is being scanned by Dr. Franklin. The scan will help Franklin treat any Minbari who need medical assistance; Delenn herself is quite healthy. Their conversation turns to the war, and Delenn essentially avoids disclosing what she was actually doing during it.

Benson has been compromised, and provides an energy pod to the two men assembling their device. Which looks like some sort of chair with technological devices on it. In his quarters, Sinclair awakes from a memory of the Battle of the Line and discovers his computer, and coms, are down. Travelling through the station to C&C, the station seems totally deserted. The computer says that there is on other lifeform on the station. When Sinclair gets to that location, there appears to be no-one there. A voice suggests that maybe he is asleep; the voice is of the man who recently arrived.

Sinclair is in a simulation. He has been abducted, and the men who abducted him want to know the truth about what happened at the Battle of the Line. Sinclair had been out of touch for 24 hours, and has no memory of what happened as he had blacked out. It seems that more than a few people do not believe this is the truth, and that he is a traitor. The Minbari, even though they were winning the war and victory was in their grasp, had suddenly and unexpectedly surrendered.

Even if Sinclair doesn’t remember, his inquisitors plan to find out the truth. Even if it kills Sinclair. Back in “Babylon 5: The Gathering” the Minbari assassin had told Sinclair that he there was a ‘hole in your mind.’ Something clearly happened, but Sinclair has no memory of it. As this is going on, Sinclair’s abduction is discovered and the station’s forces search for him.
