“Mixed Signals” is episode two of season four of The Flash.
A man is being shown a penthouse. He just seems to want it because it’s expensive. He then gets in the lift, which suddenly stops. Then goes down fast. ‘KILLG%RE’ appears on the lift’s display, then it starts shaking up and down, before plunging to the ground floor. A man with glowing purple eyes and square pupils walks away.
Barry is at home cooking breakfast. When Iris joins him, he’s catching up on all his favourite shows at 1,000 times normal speed. He gets a call to a crime scene, and Iris mentions planning their wedding. Barry has done everything.
Joe and Captain Singh meet Barry at the scene. Barry looks in the lift and says the dead man is everywhere. They apparently have an ID; the dead man was worth billions. Barry sees marks on the floor and ceiling of the lift; he was shaken to death. Cisco arrives as the technical consultant; he checks the lift’s computer and finds encrypted code. This isn’t a glitch; it was hacked.
Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, Cisco sets to work on decrypting the code, then talks to Barry about everything in the new suit. Barry is heading back to CCPD and tells Iris he’s cancelled something. After Barry has gone, Caitlin mentions how when she and Ronnie started dating as well as working together, they went to couple’s therapy. Iris says they don’t need therapy. She’s protesting too much. Then an alarm for an unauthorised breach goes off and Caitlin has to contain Killer Frost. She, Iris and Wally head to the breach and Cisco runs in telling them to hold fire. It’s Gypsy. He asks for a little more notice next time; people come through there wanting to kill them. And he’ll be ready for their date in one hour. Two, tops.
A man is in a car when it, too, is hacked and KILLG%RE displays. The hacker watches, then the car drives off at speed. Iris tells Wally and Barry; Barry heads out by himself. And ignores Iris’s suggestion, sending the car down a street that’s under construction. He has to dismantle it at speed.
Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, Cisco says it’s the same weird code that he hasn’t managed to crack. Caitlin thinks it looks a virus. An organic virus, not a computer virus. The hacker is a meta. Cisco thinks he’s heard of both victims before.
Iris wants to talk to Barry. She’s been thinking about what Caitlin said and thinks couple’s therapy will help. Barry agrees. Good, because their appointment is in 30 minutes. They’re waiting for the therapist and Barry sees an article about Mayor Queen being the Green Arrow. The therapist comes in; Iris had apparently made it sound urgent on the phone. They end up listing funerals they’ve been to. There are a lot.
Cisco has found an article linking the two victims in an old magazine. They, a woman and the hacker worked on something called KILLG%RE. The hacker bumps into Joe at the precinct, then activates a bomb disposal robot. Joe is interviewing the driver when the robot comes in holding a grenade. He summons Barry, who manages to get there and scoop all the fragments of the grenade out of the air when it explodes.
There’s a fair bit about relationships in this episode, Barry and Iris’s, and Gypsy and Cisco’s. Plus, they have to catch the meta hacker.
