“White Light” is episode six of season one of The 4400 and the season finale.
In the previous episode, “Trial by Fire”, Kyle had told Tom and Linda that he wasn’t Kyle. He’s now in a hospital room with them, with the television on, flicking through the channels. Kyle is asked if he isn’t Kyle, who he is. He doesn’t know. The doctor speaks to Tom; Kyle seems to have severe dissociative disorder, which isn’t uncommon in newly awoken coma patients. They did the right thing to bring him back.
Diana is with Maia getting something from a food cart vendor. Afterwards, Maia says the man is going to fall in love today. No, not with Diana. Maia wants to know how long she’s going to be like this. She doesn’t want to know things before they happen. She wants to be normal like she used to be. Diana asks who is normal anyway. Maia says Diana is. Diana tells her normal people wish they were special.
Tom has returned to Kyle’s room, where he asks Kyle what he’s looking for. Maybe they can help him find it. Kyle doesn’t seem to want to. Tom leaves to get some things and Lytell watches him go, then enters the hospital with three men. They head to Kyle’s room and Linda sees them go in. They start taking Kyle away; Kyle whispers to Linda to tell Tom he’s figured it out. Je knows where he has to be.
Ryland is not happy with Lytell’s actions. Tom is even more upset and puts his gun under Lytell’s chin. Lytell asks Ryland if he will help. A tough call. Ryland does get Tom to put his gun away and walk away. Tom says he should have pulled the trigger. Ryland was tempted to let him. But that wouldn’t get Kyle back. It would make Tom feel better, though. Tom asks why Kyle and not Shawn. Because their doctors have been over Shawn a dozen times; Kyle is new territory. Tom wants to do more than Ryland can.
Diana comes in and asks what happened. She follows Tom out. If he’s in trouble, she needs to know, as she may be able to help. Tom tells her to stay out of it. She doesn’t.
Lily is seeing Dr Kern. The doctor wants to draw some more amniotic fluid. Lily asks what’s wrong. She later tells Richard at Arcadia Estates that there’s a genetic anomaly. Jordan Collier drives up in a golf cart and speaks to them. He tells Richard that Lily thought Jordan was trying to steal her away.
Tom has told Diana about Shawn. She isn’t happy, given how many times she asked him if there was something different about Shawn. Tom reminds her she called the 4400 disease vectors. Diana reminds him she’s now living with one. Tom would prefer to continue the reprimand later. Okay. So, what do they do? We? Of course we. Tom says they find Kyle and bring him home.
Richard heads to Jordan’s office. He’s out, but his assistant is on the phone. With Dr Kern. Richard manages to get Jordan’s phone logs. It’s seems he’s been talking to the doctor quite frequently. Richard heads to see Kern to find out what Jordan knows about the baby. Later, he tells Lily that the baby has sickle cell anaemia. Which leads them to wonder if Richard himself is the father, if he was used as a donor. And why did Jordan have Kern keep them in the dark? Richard plans to confront Jordan.
Tom is watching Lytell; he calls Diana when Lytell is logged in. She’s with the theorists and they get Kyle’s location in the detention centre. Diana says to wait until after 5 PM and the night shift is on; less people. Linda arranges a safe house, using an empty property.
When Diana heads to pick Maia up, she finds Lytell talking to her. Afterwards, Maia says she doesn’t like Lytell, and he doesn’t really like her either. Diana tells her not to worry about Lytell. She won’t let anything bad happen to Maia.
Nikki and Shawn are now in a relationship; neither has told Danny yet. Nikki ends up doing so after Danny buys her a gift. That doesn’t go so well. Jordan, however, is not so bothered by Richard confronting him.
Some answers are finally discovered and there’s a six-month gap in the episode.
