“Voices Carry” is episode three of season two of The 4400.
In the locker room of a baseball team, one of the players is Gary Navarro, abducted in 1973. Another player reassures him about getting into the big leagues, but also thinks that he can’t blame Gary for being concerned; there are six scouts in the stands. And Gary can hear it. And everyone else. Including when he goes out to bat. He yells at everyone to shut up and is insisting there’s nothing wrong with him. He isn’t convincing. Gary ends up going for one of the scouts.
Richard and Lily arrive at a motel room to rest up for a day or two. Lily asks if they have enough cash to make it. After getting Richard patched up at a hospital from injuries he got in the previous episode, “Wake-Up Call: Part 2”, they’re short of funds. Whilst Lily gets a shower, Richard talks to Isabelle, He says it was her who got the three men in the woods to kill each other. She doesn’t answer.
Shawn is about to go out on stage to speak. Jordan reassures him, then gets told that an Ian Dravitt is there to see him.
Tom and Diana are showing Nina Jarvis photos of the meeting between the two. Dravitt runs a multinational company based in Zimbabwe whose real money comes from mercenaries and arms dealing. However, they can’t get anything from beyond the lobby of the building. They get agents in, but any bugs placed are removed by the end of the day. It could be that Jordan is planning a defence. Like Waco. Or Johnstown. Jarvis gets a call, and sends them to meet Gary,
Gary doesn’t want them to talk; it’s too noisy. Voices and thoughts bleed together. Just think. It started a couple of weeks ago, during a game. He can hear people’s thoughts. At first, it was just the pitcher, which was good; Gary knew what he was going to throw before he threw it. But he can’t control it and he started hearing more and more people. Gary wants someone to make it go away; he was close to making it to the majors when he was snatched and this time, he has to make it. Jarvis is told – she can think of applications. Gary has been given meds to calm down. She agrees he will be treated.
Kyle arrives at university to discover his tuition hasn’t been paid. He is not best pleased.
Jarvis finds Tom; she doesn’t want to send Gary to medical yet. They want to find out what Jordan is up to; well, Gary can read minds. Legal has cleared it. Tom isn’t sure it’s ethical. Jarvis tells him Gary wants help; he can help them first. If he says no, Tom should get him to say yes.
Lily is trying to get another at the motel and has to pay $5 for it. When the man goes to get it, the till opens again. And she takes far more than $5 back.
Diana and Tom are telling Gary what they want him to do. He will be monitored the whole time and if anything goes wrong, they’ll go and get him. Gary explains that what he had in 1973 is gone; his little brother is retiring and the guys he played ball with are now signing autographs. The game is all he has. Tom says he gets that. He played in college until he blew his knee out. Gary asks him if he misses it. All the time. What they’re asking isn’t the World Series, but it’s important. Gary asks if they will fix him if he does this. Tom gives his word.
Tom arrives home and finds Kyle there. Kyle suggests Tom ask how his first day at university went. Tom asks. Kyle didn’t have one; his tuition wasn’t paid. Tom is sure he paid it. He didn’t. He apologises and blames work for being busy. Kyle expected that.
Lily has bought Chinese. She ends up explaining to Richard that she took the money when the cash register came open. Richard is unhappy. Lily knows it was wrong, but they needed the money. He should eat. He doesn’t want to.
Gary’s meds help keep him under control, and he’s sent in to the 44o0 place to investigate. Diana’s sister has come to town; she may not be the best influence on Maia.
