“Try the Pie” is episode five of season four of The 4400.
In the previous episode, “The Truth and Nothing But the Truth”, Tom confirmed that Kyle was positive for promicin. He arrives home but Kyle isn’t there. Tom rings Kyle, who answers. Tom says they need to talk in person; can he come home? Kyle agrees, but after hanging up, Cassie tells him Tom knows Kyle took promicin. She gives him directions, both in car and on foot, which he writes down. When Isabelle enters, Tom says they’re leaving.
Maia jolts awake from a disturbing dream in which she and others with yellow armbands and a black P on them were taken somewhere. She tells Diana people with abilities were being taken somewhere bad. She has it in her notebook; this is the second time she’s had the dream.
Kyle and Isabelle have reached Evanston. When Diana arrives in NTAC, Tom has tracked the last location of Kyle’s phone. He tells Diana he needs her to cover for him. The last signal from Kyle’s phone was over 4 hours away; he might be gone at least a day. Diana wants to help and Tom tells her that covering for him is the best thing. Say he’s in the field on a case. He’ll call her.
Kyle and Isabelle are now walking. And come across Jordan Collier bathing in a lake. Isabelle tries to bolt but there are others there. Kyle explains his visions and the book and how Collier has to read it. He was guided to Isabelle and Collier the same way. Collier tells the others to bring them both.
Shawn is watching the news where Gabriel Hewitt, president of the Seattle city council, is talking about him. Clippings are brought to him; everyone respects Shawn’s healing ability, but his age, lack of experience and connection to Collier weigh against him. And he’s meeting Gabriel Hewitt later and needs to try and win him over.
Isabelle and Kyle are being kept prisoner in a mine. Collier has read the book and thinks it’s wrong; he’s no messiah. Kyle says his visions are not wrong. Ever. Promicin will not just improve the world, it will bring about heaven on earth. Collier will do it and Kyle will help. Collier wants to continue this with Kyle somewhere more comfortable.
Tom arrives at the diner in Evanston. He’s directed to the sheriff and mentions Kyle’s car. The sheriff is sure Kyle will have passed through, but Tom is welcome to wander.
Diana is with Marco and the others at NTAC. She’s hoping Maia’s dream is just a nightmare. She doesn’t normally have visions whilst asleep and didn’t have this in Spain. And Maia didn’t take promicin; she is a 4400. She’s told that distinction doesn’t mean much these days as people are scared. A lot want to lock up everyone who’s promicin positive. The wrong leader could exploit that fear. Marco wants to know more specifics about the dreams but Diana doesn’t want to encourage Maia to have more nightmares.
Tom is trying to fill up with petrol but the pump isn’t working. He goes inside and the mechanic hides what he’s working on then says he has some spare gas in the back. When he leaves, Tom finds Kyle’s car covered up. He demands to know where Kyle is. Then the sheriff and a lot more people arrive; the sheriff claims that the car has been there for months. Je ensures Tom leaves town, but Tom heads back in on foot. He sees a couple of people use 4400 powers, then has to run away from a boy who screams loudly.
Kyle is talking to Collier about the book and the list of names. Once all of them take promicin, everyone will. He agrees that Collier leading them to God sounds crazy. Collier suggests not taking the book literally. If the world is healed by promicin, it could be interpreted as being heaven. They’ve allowed the government to characterise them as revolutionaries. Such destabilise and spread fear. Religions unite. He’s then told Tom is in town. Kyle explains his father knows and is just looking to protect him. Be careful with Tom; he’s Kyle’s father. And the last name on the list.
Shawn talks to Gabriel Hewitt who says he actually likes Shawn. But he’s still going to attack him. When Shawn declared, he brought the national media spotlight to the town, and Hewitt is going to capitalise on that as he has his eyes on greater things than council president.
No matter what Diana hopes, Maia’s dreams are unlikely to be just nightmares. Tom is in a town that looks to be full of 4400s. And if he is supposed to take promicin, he might be forced to do so.
