The 4400 – Pilot: Part 2

“Pilot: Part 2” is episode two of season one of The 4400.

Tom is asleep in his son’s hospital room when Diana enters and says Ryland want them to come in; the police are holding one of the 4400. In the previous episode, “Pilot: Part 1”, Orson had gone around to the house of the son of his former partner, because he needed money to keep his wife in better conditions than she was in. And the man ended up dead. He told the police what he was which is why the police contacted the DHS. He’s being held, not charged, because Ryland says there are conflicting reports.

At his high school, Shawn is getting stared at when another kid comes over and hassles him. It seems Shawn sold him stolen concert tickets, Rossi got arrested and he had drugs on him at the time. Danny and Nikki intervene and Rossi calls Shawn a freak. And says he likes the new paintjob on his ride. Someone had painted ‘Freak.’

Tom and Diana are at the precinct; the detective says the security cameras watch everything. Orson was clearly upset – justifiably, probably – but he never went inside. Kensington fell onto glass and impaled himself. Tom wants the tape rewinding, and they see glass showering out. Yes; something blew out the windows from inside. They can’t figure out why and Orson isn’t talking.

Tom and Diana speak to Orson. He went to Kensington’s house. He isn’t sure why. Diana starts reading an email from Kensington to his attorney. It’s not a great one. The coffee pots are trembling and when she concludes with Kensington saying Orson is a pathetic case, both crack. Orson is bleeding from the nose. He also says charge him with something or let him go. As he’s being released, Tom says Diana shut Orson down.

Maia is laying flowers on her parents’ graves with the couple who took her in. The man says the cemetery used to be so nice. Maia says he doesn’t have to worry. Crown Ridge is nice. That’s where he’ll be. Be what? Buried. Maia is definitely heading into creepy child territory.

In the morgue, Tom and Diana are told Kensington is a rock star in death. An x-ray of his skull shows many cracks. The coroner has never seen a skull in this kind of shape. Even that of the person who went off the Space Needle. Being impaled on glass would have killed Kensington. But he was already dead, from a shattered skull.

Richard calls Lily’s house. Her daughter answers, but Lily isn’t there. Her husband had moved on and her daughter doesn’t even know Lily is her mother. Lily is currently seeing a doctor. She can’t give Lily anything for the nausea, because it’s not nausea. She’s pregnant. Lily would have thought the quarantine doctors would have told her. The doctor says she had a full scan, but that was 7 weeks ago. If she’d just conceived, it wouldn’t have shown up in her tests. She must have conceived around the time she disappeared. Not mentioned, but worrying, perhaps after she was taken.

Nikki speaks to Shawn at school. She invites him to a party. He declines, as it would be talking about music he hasn’t listened to and movies he hasn’t seen. School is bad enough. It looks like Nikki is interested in him. She may have been before, but she was several years younger.

Orson heads to the home where his wife is. Her alcove is being cleaned out. She died. Orson starts getting very upset, causing everything to shake and things to explode. At least no-one dies.

Tom and Diana are looking at a map of where all the American members of the 4400 originally lived. Diana wonders if the number means something. Tom asks if it was 3,781 it would be not as strange? Well, slightly less strange. Two weeks after release, 65% of the people are still in Seattle. They aren’t going home and can’t give good reasons as to why. Well, many don’t have homes. In CDC terms, it’s a statistically significant disease cluster.

Lily is telling her ex-husband about the pregnancy. He was studying for the bar when she was taken and she hadn’t been with anyone else. He says he missed her when she was taken, and it’s not fair to her but he has another family now. And a temporary restraining order to keep her away. Heidi thinks his second wife is her mother. He doesn’t want to use it, but will.

Tom and Diana are filled in on what happened with Orson at the nursing home. Tom tells them not to talk to the press, or he will take an interest in the place. He probably should anyway. It will get out, though.

The 400 clearly have had something done to them and some are already showing unusual powers, all different.
