“Mommy’s Bosses” is episode thirteen of season two of The 4400 and the second part of the two-part season finale.
Tom and Diana are rounding up a 4400 to be brought in to quarantine. In the previous episode, “The Fifth Page”, they discovered that NTAC was behind the illness. Tom tells Diana this is wrong; she asks what he wants them to do, walk into NTAC and shout that they made the 4400 sick. Tom thinks that’s a good start, and that they can take the medical records to Ryland. Diana asks him if he really thinks Dr Hudson and a couple of others hatched this plan on their own without approval. Ryland was division head what this started. They need to keep quiet until they know how far up this goes. Inside their car, the 4400 is tearing up an address.
The address is where Richard and others of the 4400 are hiding out. Lily is on the phone with Richard, because she took Isabelle and left in the previous episode. She says she admires what Richard is doing, but this isn’t Lily’s fight and she doesn’t want it to be Isabelle’s either. After hanging up, Lily notices the rash on her arms. Seconds later, it’s all over. She starts to call an ambulance, but it’s vanished as quickly as it came.
Diana and Tom arrive at NTAC. Jarvis is back and is with Ryland in the office. Ryland beckons them in; they lost their first 4400 overnight. Diana wants to go to quarantine, as does Tom. Alana doesn’t even know who Tom is and Maia is asleep. Shawn says she was awake earlier and said that Diana would make everything okay. Diana grabs Tom; they have an appointment with Hudson. Which involves pointing a gun to Hudson’s head.
Eight weeks after the 4400 were returned, Hudson told Ryland that they had a fifth neurotransmitter, promicin, one never seen before. It opens up new parts of the brain and every 4400 is producing trace amounts and it’s only a matter of time before they get something. Ryland will speak to DC.
Hudson tells Diana and Tom that DC panicked. They ordered production of a drug intended to stop the production of promicin. Once the inhibitor was ready, it was given to every 4400. Tom says it didn’t work; Hudson tells him that without it, every 4400 would have developed powers. But they weren’t trying to kill anyone. He’s trying to undo it. If Diana wants to pull the trigger, be his guest. Maybe he’ll finally get some sleep.
Allison arrives at Kyle’s to tell him that Marsden is going to take a plea deal for life. Kyle has been insisting Marsden isn’t guilty, so did his father say something. If her boyfriend accepts, there’s no chance of parole for 20 years. Kyle says Marsden isn’t going to prison.
Tom and Diana find some of their reports are missing. They then head to meet Ross and Dr Burkhoff. Burkhoff has figured out what promicin is, and if he can get a sample from one 4400 who hasn’t been exposed to the inhibitor, he thinks he can neutralise it.
Which then cuts to Lily and Isabelle. Brian arrives with food. His wife has got mad and will stay away for a few nights. Brian starts hitting on Lily, even when she says no. She hits him, he punches her, she grabs a knife and ends up killing him. Then the phone rings. It’s Brian; he was going to bring some food. The body is gone.
Ross is briefing Richard; safe houses are being found. Richard suggests fighting back; Ross tells him they can, but there’s no turning back if they do. Burkhoff is fretting; Ross tells Richard to get him working. That calms Burkhoff down. Richard offers Burkhoff anything he needs. He needs a clean 4400; does Richard have one of those. In fact, he might. Richard tries to contact Lily, but she ends the call.
Ryland is drinking with Tom; Tom asks if his conscience is bothering him. It is. Which is a good sign. Ryland says they need to focus on the job. Tom says you can look for one thing and find something else. Ryland agrees, handing over an envelope. Which contains photos of Kyle as he went to kill Jordan Collier. Marsden is Ryland’s gift to Tom. During the conversation, Hudson was getting in his car. He thought he heard a sound.
Tom returns home and tells Kyle NTAC knows. Kyle is bothered about Marsden. Tom wants to deal with him first, then Marsden. Kyle was writing a confession.
Jarvis is telling Diana that Hudson killed himself. Tom arrives as Jarvis leaves; Tom doesn’t really think it’s suicide. They have an inter-office note from Hudson. Find the Firewall memo.
Brian arrives at Lily’s again. Then turns to Shawn. Then appears outside the door again. Lily says they need to go; Isabelle doesn’t want to be here.
Tom and Diana need to find a memo and Isabelle holds the key to curing the 4400. No true cliff-hanger, but new threads for season three.
