“As Fate Would Have It” is episode six of season two of The 4400.
Jordan is singing a lullaby to Isabelle; in the previous episode, “Suffer the Children”, Jordan asked Lily and Richard to come back, assuming that Isabelle didn’t have any problems. Lily and Richard are inside, talking; they find the change in situation weird. Shawn enters and greets them, asking if Jordan is dealing with NTAC for them. He is, but they’re going to pay the fines themselves. The 4400 Centre is preparing for a reunion; people are coming from 27 countries. There haven’t been so many of them together since quarantine. Lily asked what happened. Shawn says that Jordan is.
Maia runs into a room, crying to Diana and April that he’s going to die. He being Jordan. Someone is going to kill him.
Diana and Tom tell Nina Jarvis and Marco; Diana explains that Maia was keeping her visions quiet. Marco says Maia is never wrong. According to Diana, Maia has two kinds of visions. In the first, she sees the event clearly enough that she can sometimes influence it. But most of her visions are abstract and these can’t be changed. This is the second type. They are never wrong. Tom says no-one has made a concerted effort to change them yet. There is no timeline, though, and everyone is a suspect. Marco asks if they really want to save Jordan; he’s kind of the bad guy. Nina suggests this is what the future wants. Tom that this is a message to stop it from happening.
Diana and Tom tell Jordan. He doesn’t seem that bothered. Or convinced they are telling the truth. Whatever protection they can afford, he can afford himself.
Lily finds her former husband shopping. She wanted to thank him for what he did. And she has a present for Heidi, as it’s her birthday. Brian doesn’t have to say it’s from her.
Shawn is talking when Liv and Wayne arrive. They have brought friends they want Shawn to heal. Shawn says it isn’t that simple; he can’t heal everyone. Not even just that handful. He could maybe do one. Wayne says that’s better than none. Shawn asks who chooses? He can’t heal the world.
Kyle is with Danny. He seems spaced out, but he reassures Danny he hasn’t had a blackout. And he doesn’t want to talk to his father about them, or discuss them.
Tom and Diana are trying to work out who would want to kill Jordan. It could be someone from his former career, someone who hates the 4400 and wants to kill the figurehead or someone with a personal grudge. Diana finds a Miles Quinlan, who claims Jordan bankrupted him and kicked him out of The 4400 Centre.
April is trying to find out from Maia when she might meet a man – she’s tired of boys – when there’s a knock on the door. It turns out to be Jordan when Maia answers it. She drops her glass and says she’s sorry, it’s not her fault. Jordan realises she recognises him and now he’s worried. He talks to April, apologising and giving a PSP before leaving.
Heidi comes to see Lily and asks her if she’s Heidi’s mother. She heard her mom and dad fighting over her. Lily says she is and explains she is one of the 4400. Yes, she did come to Heidi’s house, but she decided with her father that it wasn’t a good idea to see her. Not exactly true. And yes, it was hard not to see her.
Tom and Diana speak to Miles Quinlan. Apparently, once his money ran out, The 4400 Centre decided he’d progressed as far as he could and kicked him out. Yes, he has bought a handgun. For self-defence.
Shawn wants Jordan to cancel the reunion. Jordan isn’t going to cut himself off and become a hermit, and the centre is safer than it seems. Shawn is concerned that if something happens to Jordan, it could undo everything they’ve started. The movement isn’t ready for him to be a martyr.
Lily takes Heidi to see Richard and Isabelle. Isabelle starts crying as soon as Heidi enters; Lily escorts her daughter out.
April is telling Diana about Jordan coming. Which leads into April’s conversation about men, why Diana doesn’t date when April goes on them all the time. Maia asks which is right; not many, or a lot? Diana suggests somewhere in the middle. Maia asks if dates have to be with boys; they’re gross. Diana would like to have this conversation. In like maybe ten years. Then she spots an envelope. A subpoena. From her bosses. They want Maia’s diary.
Kyle really should tell his father about his blackouts. There’s something definitely wrong. And Isabelle is becoming quite scary.
