“Bizarro” is episode twelve of season one of Supergirl.
At the end of the previous episode, “Strange Visitor from Another Planet”, Kara and Alex were at home watching the television when a live news report showed Supergirl at the scene of a car crash. Alex asked how Kara could be there at the same time, and she replied that the other Supergirl wasn’t her. Then the other Supergirl threw the car she had just picked up and Kara said it was definitely not her.
This episode three months ago and Maxwell Lord enters his high security lab at Lord Technologies. Jane Doe is on the table and a doctor is working on her. An intravenous drip is leading into her neck and Maxwell has it started. The young woman starts convulsing and, partway through, Lord activates something. Jane Doe recovers and lives – Maxwell sounds pleased and a bit surprised.
Next it moves to yesterday, and Maxwell removes a bandage. Jane Doe is in a chair and Max starts wandering around the room, talking about how he has changed the world with his creations but how now he is going to change the meaning of life itself, not just the world, with her, his most perfect creation. Jane Doe now looks exactly like Kara. She also addresses Maxwell as My Lord.
At the DEO, Alex tells Hank that there were no signs of alien activity at the place where the fake Supergirl was, so it wasn’t an alien shapeshifter. Unless there’s something Hank isn’t telling her. Hank says that the skirt was surprisingly comfortable, referring to his impersonation of Supergirl in “Blood Bonds”, but no. Kara asks if it could be a clone but Alex says that even if a sample of Kara’s DNA was recovered and a clone was started when Supergirl revealed herself, it would still be in gestation. Maxwell Lord is raised and Alex asks if the Supergirl copy could be the woman Hank found in Maxwell’s lab in “Childish Things” but he says that Jane Doe was comatose with no brain activity. Bringing her back would be like raising the dead and Maxwell may have a god complex but he’s not an actual god.
At CatCo, Kara tells Winn that she needs to talk to him. He asks if it’s about the truck she threw into a mountain and Kara tells him it wasn’t her. Winn says he’s not interested. But he is, and asks more. Kara asks if they are now on a planet where he is talking to her again. Cat arrives and Kara rushes over and apologises, for she has forgotten to pick up Cat’s latte. Cat has picked up her own – and one for Kara too. Just how Kara likes it. Now, that’s weird. And possibly connected to the fact that Cat’s son Adam asked Kara out on a date.
Cat wants headlines about what happened with Supergirl. Some are proposed and Kara mumbles that maybe it wasn’t even Supergirl at all. Cat finds this interesting and asks her to say more. So Kara suggests that it might be an imposter looking to discredit Supergirl. Cat says she likes that angle and goes with it.
Afterwards, James and Winn tell Kara to enjoy Cat being nice whilst it lasts. Kara wants Winn to see if he can find if there are any comatose patients of her height, age and weight who have gone missing. Winn says he knows her measurements and, when James looks at him, says he needed them to make Kara’s suit. Kara then receives a text message from Adam and tells them she’s going on a date with him.
Lord’s Supergirl is watching clips of Supergirl on a screen, and seems to be getting electric shocks as she does. Lord tells her that Supergirl is very bad, and needs to be stopped forever and replaced with someone else. He asks Jane Doe what we do to bad people and she replies kill them. Maxwell appears to have gone into full-on evil genius mode now, even if it’s a well intentioned one.
Kara’s date with Adam gets interrupted when she has to go and help some people in a cable car. Her rescue gets interrupted when Jane doe arrives. Afterwards, Kara tells Alex and Hank that the other version of her flies like her, is strong like her and fights like her., She’s exactly like Supergirl – except Kara says she talks like the Cookie Monster. Hank says that Red Tornado was designed to mimic Supergirl’s fighting style but Kara tells him that it’s not an android. Alex says that, if the copy is like Kara, she will have the same weaknesses to, such as to kryptonite.
Cat has named the copy Supergirl Bizarro. Winn has discovered that Jane Doe was taken by a facility run by Prometheus Genetics, which is owned by Maxwell Lord. Also, six other Jane Does were claimed by Prometheus. Winn suggests that maybe it took seven attempts for Maxwell to get it right. Which could be why he seemed a little surprised when Bizarro survived.
Bizarro is also a bit confused. Maxwell told her that Supergirl was bad, but Bizarro tells him that Supergirl helps people. Which is not bad. He tells her that sometimes things that seem to be good are really very bad. He probably doesn’t realise it, but he’s just effectively described himself there.
Alex has had enough of Maxwell and confronts him. Without openly admitting anything, he says how Bizarro could have been created. For the good of humanity. He also drops hints that he knows just how close to Supergirl Alex actually is – which he does, as he spied on them together. Lord tells Alex that, if she tries anything, things could get very bad for her and the people she loves.
Bizarro is not simply a duplicate of Kara – she’s the opposite. Some of her powers are the opposite too. Which is going to cause problems.
Winn and James talk about Kara and Winn essentially suggests that James do something. Kara is questioning whether her potential relationship with Adam could can actually work.
There’s a sort of cliff-hanger ending leading into the next episode, “For the Girl Who Has Everything”.
