“Human Error” is episode eighteen of season seven of Star Trek: Voyager.
Seven of Nine, without any Borg implants, is playing the piano. Next, she’s in the mess hall for Tom and B’Elanna’s baby shower. The captain suggests, now that Seven’s implants are removed, that she might have children herself one day. Seven is considering less radical changes; she may not have rank but she’d appreciate a uniform. The captain agrees and suggests that, given that Seven no longer needs to regenerate, she could have quarters too. Chakotay says that it’s traditional that everyone shares their best wishes for the baby and perhaps Seven might like to start. Seven makes a good one.
Voyager is hit by something, an energy discharge according to Tom. Tuvok says it’s several light years away and Captain Janeway contacts Seven. Who is with the captain in the mess hall. She’s actually on the holodeck. The program deactivated, Seven still has her implants.
In astrometrics, Seven informs the captain, Tuvok and Tom that there is an unusual amount of subspace radiation ahead, as well as metallic debris. The captain checks with Tom that B’Elanna doesn’t know anything and asks if Seven will be attending the actual baby shower. Seven declines. When only she and Tuvok are left, Tuvok admits he does not like social gatherings either.
On the holodeck, Seven, in uniform, is in her new quarters with Neelix discussing decor when Chakotay arrives with a dreamcatcher. Now that she sleeps instead of regenerating, he thought it might be handy. Neelix excuses himself as the dynamic between Seven and Chakotay is interesting. She invites him for a meal; he agrees, promising to bring wine. And furniture.
In sickbay, the Doctor is examining Seven whilst singing one of the nursery rhymes he recorded for the baby. A horrifically updated warp civilisation version rhymes, of “Rocka-bye-Baby”; Seven asks if it’s his attention to soothe or traumatise the child. He asks if she’s experiencing shoulder pain. She is. One of her implants is out of alignment. Seven asks if the clamp can be removed instead of fixed. Not if she wishes to keep using the arm. And has she missed any regeneration cycles? She has. The Doctor asks why, and Seven is snippy about her personal life. The Doctor didn’t know she had one. Then the ship shakes.
Voyager has been hit by a shockwave from an energy burst. Their warp field destabilises, and before they can warp out another burst hits, knocking out the warp drive. The next burst is too far away to do damage. If it is a weapon, either Voyager isn’t the target or the shooter is a lousy shot.
In astrometrics, Seven explains to Tuvok and the captain that the bursts are coming from long range subspace warheads; debris suggests dozens have been fired over the last several weeks. They appear to be destroying unmanned probes. It’s going to be 48 hours before the warp drive is fixed; Seven believes she can detect the warheads before emergence.
Icheb arrives in astrometrics; the Doctor sent him to relieve Seven, as he wants her to regenerate. She heads to engineering with a baby gift for B’Elanna; shoes that will keep a baby’s feet warm even after temperatures are so low that the wearer would be an icicle. Then asks how B’Elanna does her hair. B’Elanna seems, unsurprisingly, utterly stunned by the question.
Back on the holodeck, and Seven is wearing a red dress, which Chakotay compliments. Things are getting rather romantic. Seven appears to be suffering from holoaddiction, and there are definite similarities to the TNG episode, “Hollow Pursuits”, in which Barclay spent all his time in the holodeck. It’s affecting Seven’s work. Just as Voyager appears to have blundered into a weapons range.
