“Two Days and Two Nights” is episode twenty-five of season one of Star Trek: Enterprise.
After the events of the previous two episodes, “Fallen Hero” and “Desert Crossing”, the Enterprise is finally in orbit around Risa. Captain Archer is heading down and tells T’Pol it doesn’t feel right; he shouldn’t be going down to a pleasure planet when half the crew has to stay onboard. T’Pol tells him they all drew lots. The captain says the crew comes first. T’Pol firmly tells him he needs a vacation. In the shuttle bay, Hoshi tells the captain she’s glad he decided to take time off. The captain says he wouldn’t have missed it. T’Pol gives him a look. Trip promises to bring T’Pol back a souvenir.
Travis is planning to go rock climbing. Reed has heard species from all over visit Risa and he and Trip plan to broaden their cultural horizons. Hoshi has left her translator on the ship; she plans to learn a new language. The captain has a villa overlooking the ocean; he plans to relax.
T’Pol is in sickbay with Cutler and Dr Phlox. Phlox is going to hibernate for two days; normally it would be six. Cutler will provide medical attention whilst he’s out, but they can always wake him if needed. But only in an emergency. Cutler injects Phlox and he heads to bed.
In Archer’s villa is a note from T’Pol. With a gift to help him relax. The Teachings of Surak. Complete and unabridged. Outside, another dog is barking on another balcony.
Reed and Trip are in a club. The captain is reading on his balcony at night and heads inside to get another drink. The other dog barks and Porthos hears it. When Archer returns, the other dog is now on the balcony. Then the door goes and the other’s owner arrives. She gets her dog and introduces herself as Keyla. She chats to Archer, who asks if she can recommend a restaurant. She does. He invites her to go with him. She can’t tonight. But can tomorrow.
Hoshi chats to a couple of Risans in a restaurant in their own language. They tell her most don’t bother and are impressed about how fast she’s learning. A man overheard and comes over after they leave. He tells her she’s very adept at language. She explains it’s her job; she’s a communications officer. He introduces himself as Ravis and asks how many languages she knows. Nearly 40. Has she found one she couldn’t learn? Not yet, though Klingon was harder. Ravis asks Hoshi is she thinks she could learn his language. She asks where he’s from and he spouts a bunch of incomprehensible syllables. The name of his planet. He can’t say it slower; that would change the meaning. Ravis’s own people can hardly speak it properly. Hoshi isn’t going to give up.
Reed and Trip are approached by two Risan women, Dee’Ahn and Latia. They invite them for a drink and explain it’s their first trip to Risa. The two will make sure their visit is memorable. Which, in retrospect, can have multiple meanings.
Reed and Trip’s encounter does not go to plan. The captain chats to Keyla and seems to be getting on fine. Hoshi is definitely enjoying herself. Travis has problems when rock climbing and it turns out that Phlox is not a morning person when woken early from hibernation.
