“The Storyteller” is episode fourteen of season one of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Chief O’Brien and Doctor Bashir are heading to a Bajoran village which is apparently having a medical emergency, although the Chief tries to get out of it, as he currently finds the good doctor a bit annoying. When they get there, they discover that the emergency is a single old man who is dying of natural causes.
The old man is the religious leader of the village, and he is the one responsible for protecting it from an unusual creature that appears five nights every year – and this is the fourth – and tries to destroy the village. Before he dies, he appoints O’Brien as his successor – which O’Brien really doesn’t want, so he and Julian attempt to find out what the destructive force is.
Meanwhile, back on DS9, Sisko is mediating a dispute between two Bajoran factions in order to prevent a war. One of the faction leaders is a young girl, who is trying rather too desperately to prove she is worthy, causing her to be rather stubborn. Jake and Nog, when they see her, take a liking to her and try to become her friends.
