“The Collaborator” is episode twenty-four of season two of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
It’s a few days before the election of a new Kai by the Vedek Assembly, and Vedek Bariel – with whom Major Kira has now got an intimate relationship – is the front runner. Which doesn’t please the rather unpleasant Vedek Winn – who already tried to kill him in “In The Hands of the Prophets”.
Bariel is having visions from the Orb that are disturbing him, though. Then, a Bajoran who served in the Bajoran government that collaborated with the Cardassians during the occupation turns up on the station, despite being exiled. He offers Vedek Winn some information which she believes she can turn to her advantage.
The man says he knows the identity of the person who ordered another Bajoran to betray a resistance cell to the Cardassians, which resulted in the deaths of every member of the cell, including the son of the previous Kai, Opaka. Kira gets dragged into looking into this allegation – which implicates Bariel.
The deeper she looks, the more Bareil looks guilty, but Kira cannot believe this to be true, even though it appears to be. Winn’s position will be strengthened if she can discredit the frontrunner.
