“The Ascent” is episode nine of season five of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Jake is moving into new quarters with Nog, who is back on the station for a year of field studies. A year at Starfleet Academy has changed Nog (to the degree that Rom actually checks to see if he’s a Changeling), and the two friends start to clash. Nog is now a neat freak and concerned with study and physical fitness. Jake is pretty much the opposite, so problems arise when two conflicting living styles meet.
Odo, meanwhile, is escorting Quark to a Federation Grand Jury in a runabout. Odo is pleased to have finally got a reason to get Quark to where he belongs. During the trip, though, a bomb is detected on the vessel, and although they find it, attempting to remove it causes an explosion and the runabout has to make a forced landing. It turns out that Quark was actually appearing at the trial as a witness against the Orion Syndicate.
The two are left on a planet with a broken runabout, cold weather, no replicator, two ration packs, poisonous local flora and no means of communicating. Unless they take the subspace transmitter and carry it to the top of a rather tall mountain, they are going to die.
This episode probably happened just after the events of Star Trek: First Contact, although the film isn’t referenced.
