“Statistical Probabilities” is episode nine of season six of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Four genetically enhanced humans, just as Bashir was revealed to be in “Doctor Bashir, I Presume?”, are being dropped off at the station for a few weeks by a Dr. Loews. Unlike Bashir, they are not quite as well adjusted as Julian is. They are actually part of the reason that DNA resequencing is illegal. Another reason is Khan Noonian Singh and the Eugenics Laws. Jack is intelligent, hyperactive and perhaps a bit dangerous, Sarina is silent and withdrawn, Patrick is nervous and emotional and Lauren is more than a little flirtatious. None can really pass for normal the way Dr. Bashir did for so long. Julian finds them a bit worrying; he could have suffered the same problems. Dr. Loews has brought them to the station so that they can spend some time with Bashir, who has integrated and is leading a normal life.
Given that they are genetically enhanced, they are restricted from joining certain professions and doing certain things. In case they try to take over the world again. Bashir’s friends agree with this, but Julian points out that he is enhanced and in Starfleet. Worf says that he is an exception. Things are a bit awkward. They are waiting to hear a speech from Gul Damar, the new head of the Cardassian government, but Jack gets into the com system and tries to get hold of Bashir. The other enhanced are hearing a noise, but no-one other than Bashir can hear it, because of his own abilities.
The enhanced watch Damar’s speech and quickly analyse what he has done, such as killing Gul Dukat’s daughter at the end of “Sacrifice of Angels”. In a surprising turn of events, Damar says that he is ready to make peace with the Federation, but Patrick says that Damar is being made to say that, he doesn’t want to. They successfully analyse the entire chain of events that led to Damar becoming head of the Cardassian government from scratch, simply by listening to his speech, and then go through everything else the computer has on Cardassia. Gul Damar and Weyoun are heading to DS9 to discuss peace. Bashir wants to show the talks to his fellow enhanced – according to Sisko, the Dominion has insisted that the talks be recorded, so that everyone can see the Dominion is serious when they say they want peace. The enhanced quickly spot that Weyoun and the Dominion is up to something. Which gives the Federation an advantage when it comes to the talks.
The enhanced then take matters further and analyse the entire future of the war and what follows. Which does not have a very good short term projection. The options do not seem good and Bashir is not happy with the result, but can’t argue with it.
