“Sons and Daughters” is episode three of season six of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Worf and Dax are getting reacquainted onboard Martok’s Bird of Prey when Sisko contacts them saying that they are arriving at a starbase shortly. The crew are happy to be getting off the Klingon ship – Martok is apparently the one who rescued them after their ship crashed in the previous episode, “Rocks and Shoals”.
Worf tells Martok that they are getting five replacement crew. Martok says that war is much more fun when you’re winning. One of the replacements is Worf’s son Alexander. Martok did not know that Alexander is Worf’s son, until he spoke to Worf after welcoming the new crew, and Alexander does not look exactly happy – he has no house, as Worf’s house does not exist.
The General’s ship is going to be the sole escort for a convoy. Martok is curious as to why Worf had never mentioned he had a son. Worf has not spoken with his son in some time, as Alexander had shown no interest in Klingon ways or becoming a warrior, yet now Alexander has joined the Klingon forces. Worf and Alexander’s initial meetings do not go well, especially as Worf does not believe that Alexander belongs on the ship. Alexander gets some stick from the rest of the crew, who know about his relationship to Worf, and his being raised on Earth.
On DS9, Major Kira and Odo are plotting what to do, with communications with their contacts on Bajor being important, when Jake joins them, saying that he wants to join in the resistance cell they are in. Kira and Odo do not appear interested. Gul Dukat is having Kira greet him every time he returns to the station. She is not happy about this. This time, he’s returning with his daughter Ziyal – who Kira had sent away from the station to keep her safe. Kira is happy to see Ziyal, but she didn’t want her back on the station. Ziyal was getting whispers behind her back because of her father fighting a war with the Emissary,
An episode about relationships. Worf’s relationship with Alexander gets tested, in battle, and no-one really considers Alexander to be a warrior. Ziyal is the only thing that Major Kira and Dukat have in common, even though Dukat seems to think there is more, and this causes problems for Kira.
Little from the rest of the Starfleet regulars apart from at the very beginning.
