“Ferengi Love Songs” is episode twenty of season five of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Quark’s bar is infested with Cardassian voles, and its been closed for several days. Quark isn’t looking forward to it being open again either. Every since his Ferengi Business License was taken away by the Ferengi Commerce Authority in “Body Parts”, he’s been unable to do business with other Ferengi, and constantly sees opportunities for profit slipping away. His brother, Rom, suggests he go and see their mother. His mother seems a bit disturbed to see him; the reason starts to become obvious when Quark finds Grand Nagus Zek in his closet.
It seems that Quark’s mother and the Grand Nagus are in a relationship. Quark thinks he may be able to convince the Nagus to give him back his business license, but the Nagus isn’t interested. However, Brunt also turns up in his closet. Brunt is also unhappy with the Nagus’s relationship with Quark’s mother. Brunt offers to give Quark back his business license – if he splits the Nagus and Moogie up.
Back on the station, Rom is marrying Leeta. However, he starts to get worried when it’s pointed out that he’s not a traditional Ferengi, and he asks Leeta to sign a traditional Ferengi marriage contract, saying that she won’t take any of his profit in the event of a divorce – as Rom’s previous wife took all his money, then left him. Leeta, being Bajoran, is not happy with this proposal. Relationship problems for both brothers – and it turns out the Grand Nagus isn’t what he was.
