“The Years” is episode three of season two of Special Unit 2.
A young man with a key card heads to a hotel room and follows a trail of clothes to a bedroom. Where, it seems, a woman is waiting. Then all the candles flame up and the woman changes. The next morning, the maid arrives. The man is in bed. Except he’s now a lot older.
A cop is dealing with an argument between a couple when it turns out they’re links. Nick and Kate arrive and cart the couple away. Carl recognises them at the precinct and greets them.
Page calls Nick and Kate in and Johnathan starts briefing them on Dylan Michaels. 19, male model, found dead 5 days ago. Of congestive heart failure caused by old age. The result of a rare female link known as a year witch. They live for centuries by sucking the life out of people to keep themselves young.
There’s a suspect. Isabelle. No last name. Kate recognises her; it seems she’s the founder and CEO of an up-and-coming cosmetics company. Dylan Michaels was participating in a photoshoot for the company on the date of the murder. No-one knows who Isabelle is and her cosmetics company is called Centuries.
On the way to meet with Isabelle, they ask Carl to meet up with his contacts. In exchange for not being prosecuted for his latest robbery. He says he’s sorry about Nick’s mother before he leaves. Kate asks if anything has changed. It hasn’t. She says they can stop in on the way, and they visit the hospital.
Isabelle, when met, enjoys baiting them. She says she did agree to meet Dylan, but he cancelled. They find it hard to believe he’d cancel on his boss. She finds it hard to believe. But not because she was his boss. Nick says someone has been murdered, but she hasn’t asked how. She wants him to sit down with her. He doesn’t. Isabelle made some calls before they came. The only thing known about Special Unit 2 is they cover crimes with special circumstances. She’s flattered she qualifies. Nick asks if she does. Qualify as special. Isabelle says he should tell her.
Back at the precinct, Nick is sure Isabelle is a link. Nick is not. Page says they can’t use force if there’s a slightest chance she’s an innocent citizen. They can’t trace Isabelle back more than a few years without her name or prints. Page gets a call. Isabelle wants to see Nick tonight.
Nick meets Isabelle in a club. She says she’s older than she looks. Carl and Kate are listening in. Isabelle says she had to make the call if she wanted to see him again. Or murder someone. She’s hoping Nick has other motives for being there other than considering her a suspect. Isabelle claims she finds it hard to find men who are a challenge. She’s older than she looks and has been to many places. When asked about Dylan Michaels, she says she had him meet her and then killed him with a kiss. She kisses Nick, and leaves. He has her glass. And prints.
Kate is now convinced Isabelle is the year witch. She practically confessed. Nick is now not so sure. She was too bold. Johnathan says Isabelle’s fingerprints weren’t on file and her company is owned by offshore shell companies. Year witches need to feed once every seven days. If they can keep her under surveillance, they can catch her. Page says that will be a challenge. Then Nick gets a box. Three more glasses in it and a note from Isabelle wanting to see him again. As the year witch needs to feed tonight, Nick thinks this solves the surveillance problem. He can see Isabelle tonight.
Kate thinks Nick is enjoying the game as much as Isabelle. Once it looks like Isabelle might be guilty, she claims she was only pretending to be a suspect, to flirt with Nick. Isabelle is definitely lying, but is she lying now or earlier? Is she the year witch?
