“The Web” is episode four of season one of Special Unit 2.
Nick is making out in a car with a woman. She asks if he wants to come in, even though this is a first date. But first she wants to talk about them and what Nick is looking for in terms of commitment. Because she’s not looking for any. Nick thinks he can manage that. Then hears a sound and looks through a night-vision monocular to see feet being dragged into an alley. He tells the woman to take the car and get out of there. Nick follows, finds a dead man and what looks to be a woman scrambles over a fence with ease. Nick follows but gets caught in webbing.
Sean says the marks on the dead guy match those on a bunch of other dead guys. A dozen in the last month, men in their 20s dressed as if they were hoping to get lucky. Nick says the man looked as if all the life had been sucked out of him. According to Sean, all the bodily fluids were drained and only a neurotoxin, similar to that used by black widow spiders, was left behind. Captain Page calls Kate and Nick over. The police have a suspect whose date was murdered the same way; she said her date was abducted by a man-sized insect-like creature. A witness to interview. Alice Chadmore, in county general psychiatric ward.
Kate is guessing about Nick’s date. Between 1st and 3rd, with someone who’s unavailable much of the time; a flight attendant in this case. Because he’s afraid of relationships. And her name was? Shandi.
Alice Chadmore’s doctor says she’s a paranoid schizophrenic who killed her date. Even if she is otherwise rational with no history of mental illness. He’s going to make sure she spends the rest of her life locked up. She attacked and murdered a man and detached herself from the crim with an elaborate story.
Alice doesn’t see the point in speaking to them. Even she thinks her story is crazy. Nick believes she saw something and that she’s not a murderer. Alice didn’t see anything prior to the attack. The streets were empty; that’s why she asked Roger to walk her home. Though, in the club, the Blue Martini, a woman tried to pick up Roger as they were leaving. She grabbed Alice. Tall, thin with short dark hair. Which matches what Nick saw. Nick gives Alice something to page them if she needs to.
At the Blue Martini, Kate comments she’s not used to seeing displays of actual empathy from Nick. Isn’t Alice a bit normal for him? As for the club, Nick thinks there will be security tapes. Because a man who owns a club wants to be around hot flossy babes he can video, but he’ll deny it because it sounds sleazy. Which is why Carl is going to break in and steal them.
Alice is asleep in the otherwise empty ward at the hospital. She wakes up to a scuttling sound and uses the device Nick gave her. There’s something in the chimney. Alice tries blocking the fireplace, but she can’t get out of the room. The think is now in the room, but Kate and Nick arrive and drive it away. The doctor doesn’t want to sign Alice into their custody. Nick gives him an ultimatum. The doctor says there’s nothing Nick can say to convince him. Nick draws a gun instead. The doctor is convinced.
Nick has Alice stay at his apartment. Because it seems he has developed a liking for her. Meanwhile, they need to track down the spider-woman. Or, as it turns out, spider-women. And Carl is thrashing Sean at a video game.
