“The Rocks” is episode six of season two of Special Unit 2.
A drunken man is not doing so well at hitting on women in a bar when one lights his cigarette for him. She’s joined by a second who whispers something in his ear. He chokes on the cigarette and says it sounds excellent. They leave.
The next morning, another man goes looking for the first and finds him still in bed. Petrified.
Kate is dining with a man called Ian (Sebastian Spence) with whom it seems she had a relationship in the past. And possibly the future. Nick rings and she tells him it had better be an emergency with sirens and flashing lights. Nick puts on the siren and lights. He’s outside.
At the scene, Kate says there’s evidence of more than one woman. Hair from two wigs. There was a bunch of matchbooks from places Nick recognises. He says they don’t all hang onto their first love. Kate says she let him go. He came back. For now, according to Nick; long distance relationships are difficult. Kate says they don’t have a relationship at all now. They had one in college and nearly got married. Now he’s back.
Johnathan has an unloaded gun tucked into his trousers. Fortunately unloaded. He put in a request for forensic fieldwork. The captain approved it. Page said he’d consider it, not approve it. The dead man was turned to stone by venom injected into him. The prime suspect is a female link. Not exactly Medusa; that’s just a specific Gorgon. No-one has ever seen a Gorgon. It’s not their gaze but a slow-acting venom in a snakebite. It takes 5-8 hours to act. Kate asks how you kill a Gorgon. Chop its head off.
Nick takes Kate to meet a Sphinx called Harold. Harold finds it difficult to answer a question unless you solve a riddle first. But he eventually talks about two girls at Club 68.
Kate and Nick are inside the club; Nick is at the bar and the waitress gives him her number. Then two brunette women come over and invite him back to theirs. They’ll get their things. Carl is outside with Harold. Two more, blonde, women buy Nick a drink. Kate asks Nick which set he thinks is most likely to kill him. Nick talks to the blondes; the brunettes are waiting. Nick decides to go with the blondes. Kate checks with Harold. He’s not sure; he isn’t so good with faces.
Inside an apartment building, the two blondes say they’re sisters and want to do it in the hallway. One kisses Nick and he sees a snake under her hair. He draws a sword; it’s kicked out of his hand then Kate comes out of the lift and shoots the second no-longer-blonde. The first jumps out a window.
The Gorgon is taken back. She’s calcified, because Kate’s bullet her venom sac and it acted on her. No wallet, ID or clothing labels, and the fingerprints vanishes when she was calcified. Only a lottery ticket. Nick and Kate leave Johnathan doing an autopsy of the Gorgon. With a jackhammer.
The surviving Gorgon is posing in front of a couple of construction workers. The first tells the second not to do anything as it could be considered harassment. The Gorgon asks the second if he wants to take a walk. He should have listened to his friend.
Kate is on the phone with Ian who wants her to go to dinner. Afterwards, Nick asks what happened the first time. They were young and got jobs in different cities. Kate is 99% sure Ian is going to ask her to marry him. Nick asks what she’s going to say. Kate doesn’t know. She thinks she should. It seems that Nick was married. Briefly. Kate is hoping she’ll know the answer when Ian asks. Nick says you might not know when something is right, but you’ll probably know when it’s wrong. Then he gets a call.
Kate thinks the construction worker doesn’t meet the MO. Daylight, outside, a middle-aged overweight man with multiple bites. Not inside, at night, young, good-looking guy. Nick convinces Kate to go to her dinner. And the Gorgon is watching from above.
The surviving Gorgon likely has a grudge against Kate. Someone is bound to get bitten, given the effect isn’t instant. And then there’s Ian. It seems unlikely Kate is going to end up getting married.
