“The Beast” is episode eight of season two of Special Unit 2.
A couple of exotic dancers are chatting in a club; one is heading out. A customer tries inviting her for dinner on the way out. She asks the doorman to walk her to the car, but he’s on the phone. Outside, the woman hears something and runs, dropping her bag of tips. She gets in her car, starts driving off, then turns back for the money. The customer appears again and scares her, and she tells him to get lost. She gets into her car. And a clawed hand punches through the roof.
Nick and Kate arrive at the impound yard; Kate tried setting him up with her friend. They find the dancer’s car and tell the detective, Scott, they’re taking over. He’s not happy. He explains the woman had all her flesh and internal organs eaten. And she wasn’t the first. They know. Scott says he’s been working the case for five months; he can be of value. Nick doesn’t care. But Kate says they’d be interested in any information. Scott excuses himself to talk to the parents. Afterwards, Nick says she’s into Scott.
Back at the precinct, Jonathan says an ogre killed the dancer, Kerri. It’s the same ogre that’s been killing off and on for the last 18 months. Captain Page says think Jack the Ripper. Because that’s who this is. The ogre was killing for at least several hundred years before Jack and obviously since. Carl excuses himself as he gets an email. According to page, the ogre preys on hookers, strippers or both. Jonathan has found something amazing, scientifically speaking. The prints are from the same creature, but the DNA is inconsistent. No, he doesn’t know what it means.
Kate suggests to Nick that they head to the strip club. His favourite place. Nick denies this. For one thing, he doesn’t get paid enough to go to strip clubs every night. Page tells Kate she needs to requalify for firearms. Kate has only fired larger guns for the last year.
Jonathan is with Carl; it seems Carl met a woman online. In a fans of Rosie O’Donnell chatroom. He thinks he’s in love. She doesn’t know he’s a gnome.
Nick asks Kate to wait in the car whilst he goes in the club. He gives some good reasons. Kate says she’ll be listening. Inside, it seems like quite a few people, including the manager, recognise him. Nick says he’s looking for identical twins. Wearing chokers. He wants a lap dance. All day. Kate says she’s coming in.
When she gets in, Nick draws his gun on the twins. They’re links, carrion feeders with mouths in their necks. They eat human entrails. Nick wants to know where the ogre is. The problem is that one always tells the truth and the other always lies. And he can’t remember which. Fortunately, Kate knows the question to determine which is telling the truth.
Kate is shooting badly for her qualification when Scott finds her. He had case notes he kept unofficially. She can have them if she likes.
At the club, one dancer is heading out. The manager says she shouldn’t go out alone. She’s leaving with another. Both hear a sound outside. Inside, the manager hears someone at the door and opens it. Unfortunately, it’s the ogre.
Kate and Nick arrive at Scott’s and Kate goes to see him. He blames himself for the kill. If the killer is doing it one every day now, bodies are going to pile up. It’s almost as if the perp isn’t human. Back in the car, Kate complains that they can’t tell others they aren’t crazy.
In order to try and lure the ogre out, Kate goes undercover to see if he goes for her. That doesn’t work out so well. And leads to a surprise. Meanwhile, Carl is having problems. His online girlfriend wants to meet and she thinks he looks like Nick. Because that’s the photo he sent.
