“My Brother’s Keeper” is episode nineteen of season four of Sliders.
The Sliders arrive on a mattress – Colin’s idea – but Quinn tells them not to get too used to it; they aren’t lugging a mattress around. Not even an air mattress. Someone greets Quinn, evidently mistaking him for his double, and afterwards Quinn says his double might have access to equipment to get back home.
Quinn and Colin head to the Carl Sagan Institute. Inside, they talk about doubles and then see Quinn’s in a lab. Colin asks if they should wait until Quinn Two leaves. Quinn says there’s no point; the equipment is outdated and rudimentary and there’s nothing they can use. And Quinn Two has a flaw in his equation.
Quinn Two starts firing up his equipment and Quinn starts hammering on the, seemingly soundproofed, window, telling him to turn the power down. They rush to the lab just in time to see some of the equipment explode and Quinn calls for medics. Quinn Two has hurt his eyes. Quinn and Colin leave as some security guards arrive; one checks Quinn Two and finds a health card. It looks like Quinn Two might need some parts. Quinn says to leave before someone notices the resemblance. One of the guards does and asks how did that get out, stunning Quinn. After all the trouble spent to grow them, he isn’t just waltzing out with Quinn Two’s eyes.
Colin is asked what he’s doing with that clone anyway. Colin ends up hitting one guard and running. He finds the other two and explains that Quinn was called a clone and they needed his eyes.
Quinn and Quinn Two are wheeled into the hospital; the nurse asks which is real. Dr Mallory – Quinn Two’s father – comes in. He wants Quinn locked down and tells the security chief, Pappas, he’s supposed to run a secure facility. How did it run off? Pappas says it didn’t.
The others are outside. Maggie and Colin will go inside and Rembrandt will get a car.
Pappas and Dr Mallory are talking in front of Quinn. They seem to think he’s surprisingly intelligent for a clone and ask how he knows about lasers. He learned about them at school. And was that after he left the repository? How and when did he have his implant removed? Quinn asks about Quinn Two; they think whoever trained Quinn did an incredible job. Quinn claims he’s from Canada; however, they know he’s identical to Quinn Two. Pappas suggests terminating Quinn, from a security standpoint. Dr Mallory doesn’t want to waste good tissue. They could always use a spare.
Colin and Maggie are looking for Quinn. They arrive at the room they think is his and smuggle Quinn out. However, this is the Quinn clone. Rembrandt picked up an ambulance for them. At the Chandler, Quinn Clone comes around and they end up finding the implant and realising they got the wrong one. They need to go back, but Colin and Maggie weren’t discrete. Rembrandt wasn’t seen, so he can go back. Maggie will snoop around the hotel; there are a lot of people with missing bits.
Dr Mallory orders Quinn unstrapped. Because his son’s donor has been stolen. Quinn Two is brilliant, not merely coached to sound clever. Quinn asks if he knows what Quinn Two is working on. Dr Mallory says theoretical physics. Quinn explains what, because he was working on the same thing, only he succeeded. He’s Quinn Two’s duplicate from another world. Dr Mallory orders Quinn taken to preop and Quinn tells him something to ask his son.
The nurse finds Quinn Two; it seems they know each other. And Quinn Two didn’t know he’d been cloned. He tells the nurse to contact the others. As she leaves, Quinn Two’s father comes in. Quinn Two doesn’t want the eyes of another being. He’s been trying to open a door to another world, somewhere the clones could be taken out of his father’s reach. Dr Mallory mentions what Quinn said. Quinn Two has heard of it. But his father sedates him.
Clones are not treated as people on this world and, although Dr Mallory realises Quinn may not be one, he’s still going to take his eyes for his son. Quinn Two, however, is part of a group that is trying to stop this. And Quinn needs rescuing whilst he still has all of his bits attached.
