“Hero II: Broken Arrow” is episode five of season three of Sanctuary.
Kate is quizzing Magnus about whether she was in France during the invasion in 1944. It seems she found some items that date from them and Kate has a bet on it with Henry. Magnus is neither confirming nor denying it when an alarm goes off.
There’s been an environmental breach and they have to evacuate the Abnormals in an entire sector. The Abnormals are going to be taken to offsite storage whilst they look into what set off the alarm. Kate and Will take the Abnormals in a truck, but are hijacked along the way. Will is knocked unconscious and the hijackers open the truck looking for a specific Abnormal, a glass box of purple goo. Kate attempts to disable the attackers, but is knocked to the ground and the box of goo breaks open. The goo migrates to Kate and she gets a black domino mask but, when she stands up, is Tasered by one of the attackers.
In the season two episode, “Hero”, a superhero called the Adjustor was protecting the streets. His powers came from his suit – the purple goo now being worn by Kate. Although on her it’s a black leather bodysuit. She comes to in a facility where a scientist is attempting to remove the suit; his boss seems to be under pressure.
Back at the Sanctuary, Henry believes that the environmental alarm was set off remotely – the hijackers clearly knew Will and Kate were coming, and were looking for one specific Abnormal. There’s a connection to the company that installed the security system; Magnus knew the founder, but he’s been dead for over a decade. Probably a common problem when you live a very long time, outliving people.
Other than the Sanctuary team, only one other person knew about the suit – Walter, the Adjuster himself. He wrote a successful comic book which is now being made into a movie, and, it seems, he did accidentally let slip the secret to someone. An attractive female someone of course.
The man who sent the people to capture the goo is Virgil St. Clair, the grandson of the security company’s founder. He runs his own business, a Skunk Works type of place. During the procedure to get the suit off Kate, there is a power surge. As a result of which she breaks free. When the Sanctuary team arrive at the place she was being kept, Kate throws a Dumpster at them before climbing a wall.
According to St. Claire, it was his company that made the suit; he was experimenting with an antiballistic suit using telepathic bacteria when it escaped the lab. It seems he also didn’t use all of his own money to develop it, and that his funders want the money back.
With the process to remove the suit interrupted, the scientist says that Kate is effectively not in control of her emotions any longer. So she’s probably less a superhero than a supervillain. Also as a result of the interruption, unless the suit is removed, Kate will die.
Walter wants to help, but his offers aren’t really appreciated. Walter has been changed a bit by success, something he comes to realise through the course of the episode. Leading to a redemption story as Walter tries to prove that he still is the man he was as the Adjuster.
