“Another Mother – September 30, 1981” is episode thirteen of season two of Quantum Leap.
At the end of the previous episode, “Animal Frat – October 19, 1967”, Sam leaped into a mother with three children, two of them squabbling. He yells at them to be quiet and unplugs the radio. The older boy and older girl have torn a shirt. The youngest, Theresa, asks where her mummy is. Because she can see it’s Sam. She runs off
The son, Kevin, says he knows the divorce has been tough since his father ran off with that bimbo. But the hard part is over; she’s got the real estate license now. The older girl, Susan, says Theresa claims Sam isn’t her mother, but a strange man dressed in her mother’s clothes. She’s brought back in and this time also complains about Al’s tacky shirt and runs off again. Al realises she can see and hear him. Susan and Kevin remind Sam about everything on that afternoon.
When they’re gone, Al says that, according to Ziggy, kids under 5 can see the truth. They should tell Theresa the truth. Sam and Al explain to Theresa that her mommy has gone away for the next couple of days and everyone will pretend Sam is her. Theresa asks why. To help Kevin win the swim meet. Theresa asks if they are angels. They go with that. Sam will fix her doll and Al will read her a story. When Theresa goes, Al explains that Kevin runs away from home and vanishes. Six months later, his bloody clothes are found in an abandoned van. His body is never found. A van is just entering the state.
They’re trying to work out why Kevin would run off. Sam can’t follow Kevin around all day, so he wants Al to do that. Al finds Kevin with his friends, and they’re talking about girls. One in particular, Jackie, and Kevin defends her.
Al returns to Sam, who doesn’t want to teach a 15-year-old boy how to seduce a girl. Al says Kevin is being set up for a fall, and given how he defended Jackie, he likes her. As Sam has ruined dinner, he decides to go out for a meal.
Who is going to get Kevin is kind of known, and how they have a chance can be guessed. The problem is stopping it. Meanwhile, Theresa and Angel Al have bonded.
