“Funeral of the Century” is episode two of season two of Powers.
In the previous episode, “Caracas 1967”, it looked increasingly likely that Krispin had killed RetroGirl, as he’d stolen a Drainer from Triphammer, which would have nullified her invulnerability and allowed her throat to be slit. By the time Walker, followed by Pilgrim, Kutter and then the FBI, found Krispin, he had killed himself, leaving a note behind. What none of them know is that someone tried to kill Krispin and Chaotic Chick, which adds a different dimension to the story. It all seems a little unlikely that a couple of teenagers would have been able to do this. Walker still doesn’t believe Krispin did it, despite the fact he apparently left a public manifesto behind.
This episode opens with Walker looking at some statues, which would appear to be of Powers, in an odd-looking green place, when one starts bleeding. He’s actually dreaming. When he wakes up, there’s a news article about RetroGirl’s funeral. Walker is not feeling very good. Then he sees Calista in the mirror wearing an old costume of RetroGirl’s. She wants to show him that she can take RetroGirl’s place. Walker says that she can’t, and that she doesn’t have powers. Of course, now she does, and she shows him that she can fly. Walker doesn’t want her to end up like RetroGirl.
With the funeral of RetroGirl, people are worried that there may be trouble as she isn’t around to protect the city any longer. In particular, there are a couple of gangs, one of low grade Powers, the Quantums, and one of cyber-Powers, the Hacks, who RetroGirl kept in check simply by existing. Walker offers to talk to them, as he has a history with one of the gang leaders, Nucleus, in the hope of keeping things quiet. This does not go well. The Powers gang gets pretty much wiped out by someone posing as one of them – someone Walker says is a Hack.
Then the leader of the Hacks, The Lance (Dominic Rains, who plays Kasius in season five of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), turns up at Powers Division and says that the Hacks didn’t kill Nucleus and the others. The second in command of the Hacks is missing, and the leader says that the seconds of both gangs, THX and Laser, have teamed up. This doesn’t seem to be true though.
Zora has checked herself out of hospital, but she’s a bit of a laughing stock as the modified video of Wolfe beating her up has pretty much gone viral. She’s not very happy with her former agents either, and it looks like she may be losing her control.
A Power who used to be known as Cobalt Knight who once teamed up with RetroGirl and who is now in government as a Senator also wants to make the use of powers illegal, and turns up for the funeral. Things start getting out of hand at the funeral, with there being no RetroGirl, and that’s when Calista decides to reveal herself. During the trouble, Walker sees a completely unexpected face.
There’s a funny moment when Walker starts quoting the classic Spider-Man line to Calista.
