“Where Evil Dwells” is episode four of season three of Mutant X.
A man is writing on a window somewhere and Shalimar is at a crime scene with a dead body and another woman. The other woman says that’s the fifth as Brennan arrives. Shalimar introduces him to Andrea Marshall, a friend who’s a profiler at the Justice Department and a psionic. This murder looks like the work of the Puzzle Killer, but he’s been in a psychiatric killer for the last 2 years. A copycat has been ruled out because there were details never released to the press. Shalimar wants Andrea to come back to Sanctuary with them. Brennan is unsure but Shalimar talks him around. Elsewhere, the man has written ‘A STITCH IN TIME’ on his window and is smiling.
At Sanctuary, they are briefed that the Puzzle Killer, Lee Marker, murdered over 30 women and left the location of the next murder pinned to the victim in the form of a puzzle, taunting the police to stop him. Andrea is afraid the new killer is tuning into Marker’s mind. The puzzle left on this body was ‘A STITCH IN TIME’. Andrea is sure Marker knows what that means.
Shalimar and Andrea head to the psychiatric prison to meet with Marshall. The man who was writing on glass. He makes an anagram of Shalimar’s name and seems to be channelling Hannibal Lector. Marker knows there was another death. Andrea uses her power to get inside Marker’s mind; he seems to be enjoying it far more than her.
Back at Sanctuary, Andrea is linked up to a machine so that they can see what she saw in Marker’s mind. Lexa recognises the location and there’s a woman who is seen alive and then dead. Presumably the next victim. There’s less than two hours to stop this latest murder. Andrea wants to go back to the hospital to check the surveillance tapes. Brennan, Shalimar and Lexa head to the potential crime scene. There, Brennan spots a mobile sewing van. They’re too late; the woman is already dead.
Andrea is back at Sanctuary, taking pills. Jesse can’t track down a killer in Adam’s mutant database. Andrea asks how they track down someone as smart and powerful as Marker. By being smarter and more powerful, according to Shalimar. Andrea wants to go see Marker again. Shalimar knows a little about psionics and how they can take on the weight of the world. And is Andrea spending too much time in Marker’s head? Nietzsche and the abyss and all that.
The latest victim had a number on her. Brennan and Jesse are trying to work out what it means. Lexa has checked with her contacts; Marker always lefty clues leading to the next murder, everything from crossword puzzles to Biblical passages. Shalimar and Andrea are going to see Marker again. Marker knows it’s Andrea before he sees them. Shalimar checks that Marker isn’t psionic after all. Marker is taunting Andrea, and again seems to enjoy their mental contact more than her. Marker says Shalimar is just his type; they could have so much fun together.
Back at Sanctuary, Andrea says Marker opened more of his mind. She saw his previous kills, the thrill he got from their pain. She thinks she got pieces about the next kill. Linking her to the monitor again reveals a medical supply place, the one Marker used to work at. Brennan and Lexa head there and Andrea goes with. Andrea stays outside as the other two go in, then contacts them saying the killer is close. Then stuff breaks and Brennan and Lexa are subjected to something noxious; Brennan has to blow a hole out.
There is a twist to the story, but it’s a pretty obvious one that can be guessed ahead of time; there are certainly enough clues pointing to it.
