“Wages of Sin” is episode two of season three of Mutant X.
Shalimar jumps down behind Brennan, startling him. There’s nothing and Lexa, who joined the team in the previous episode, “Into the Moonless Night”, who is at Sanctuary with Jesse, confirms her contacts said there was a genetically engineered weapon and a buyer was meeting tonight. They’re running her contacts’ errands because they’re the ones paying Mutant X’s bills. Jesse thinks it could be someone from Genomex or someone similar. Brennan thinks they’re wasting their time and Shalimar is telling him that waiting is the best part of hunting, with another undertone, when a car drives up. A man gets out and hides an item, then leaves. Jesse runs the plate. Brennan wants to see who picks it up. Two more people arrive and one gets the item, giving it to the other. The first asks how dangerous it is. The second sprays it in his face to find out. Very dangerous. Brennan and Shalimar move in, but the man gets away, but loses the sample and a card in the process.
Jesse explains that what’s in the container is a weaponised prion. In aerosol format, a couple of ounces will kill half a city. Lexa isn’t impressed the man got away; they need information fast. The car traces back to a casino owned by a Kristen Greg. She bought it a couple of years ago for $30 million, and no-one is sure where the money came from.
Brennan and Shalimar head to the casino. Shalimar is looking at people and Jesse is identifying them from their images. Shalimar heads to the bar and sees a man with a gold chip; given to special members apparently. Jesse identifies him as Eduardo Cruz. Chilean; associated with Pinochet and now right-wing terror groups. Not a gambler. Cruz invites Shalimar to join him and escorts her to a table. Jesse has identified three terrorists with an expertise in bioweapons in the casino and the prints on the card lead to a fourth, a mysterious and largely unknown terrorist known as the Dragon.
Lexa, dressed like a maid, enters a hotel room and finds the safe. At the casino, Brennan is using his powers to cheat at roulette and Kristine comes over to see him. Greeting him by name, albeit a fake one. Brennan leaves the table after the third win and Lexa cuts her way into the safe, finding passports and another gold chip. Then the Dragon pulls a gun on her. They fight and he gets kicked off the balcony. Yet, when Lexa looks for the body, he’s gone.
Lexa doesn’t know how the Dragon got away. Jesse says the chip is full of electronics; he guesses it’s an encrypted ID. He has a file on Kristine and Lexa looks like she recognises another woman in a photo. Kristine is connected to some big hitters and even has some ex-GSA on her payroll. Jesse suggests swapping the bioweapon with something harmless, but he needs to get into the casino’s computers. And they’ve got no outside access. So, Shalimar will need to connect something.
Lexa did recognise the other woman and calls her contact, telling him that Kristine is connected to Dominique. She wants an in. When Lexa heads to the casino, she tells Brennan and Shalimar that the mission has changed; they are backing off. There are bigger things at stake. Lexa is posing as a bidder in the auction, and has turned off her commlink.
The others aren’t looking to back out that easily. Jesse noticed Lexa’s reaction to the photo, but he doesn’t know who Dominique is. Shalimar suggests letting Lexa play her hand to see what she’s up to. Brennan thinks there’s too much at stake.
So, the team has no Adam and a new member who they probably don’t fully trust. Especially as she’s keeping secrets and it isn’t clear who the people she’s working for are. Even if they were connected to Adam. And there’s a rather lethal bioweapon to keep out of the hands of terrorists.
