“The Grift” is episode eleven of season two of Mutant X.
Brennan is repeatedly rewinding and watching a video in which a woman is saying she’s probably the last person he wanted to hear from again. He probably hates her. She needs to see him, to say she’s sorry and give him back his share of the money. She’s at their old apartment. Don’t tell anyone. Brennan heads out but doesn’t tell Emma where he’s going, other than nowhere.
Brennan drives somewhere and nearly hits a kid who walks out in front. He tells the kid to watch where his going; the kid replies that it’s a nice car and his mom is waiting for Brennan in the alleyway. The apartment is not safe. Who’s his mother? Who does Brennan think? The woman from the video, Becky, is waiting there. She tells Brennan she really messed up this time and is scared. She does apologise, but doesn’t have the money. She’ll get it at some point.
Becky says what she’s involved in is serious and can’t call the police. They, and the feds, are involved. Brennan isn’t interested. Don’t do it for Becky; do it for his son, Connor. Becky says she’s telling the truth. Connor warns them at this point and a police car pulls up one side and an unmarked car to the rear. Brennan zaps the person who gets out of the unmarked car and torches the police car.
At Sanctuary, Adam asks Jesse and Shalimar what they have. They were monitoring the police scanner and have the video of the police car exploding. Adam says it’s impossible to tell if it was a weapon or a mutant. Jesse will check out the car.
Becky is telling Brennan that she was working on Daniel Foster, a man running for Congress. He liked to carry around a briefcase full of cash. She got him in the habit of letting her hold the briefcase, then swapped it for another. This one had a disc inside, not cash, and they’ve been trying to kill her ever since. Becky wants to sell it back. That’s where Brennan comes in. Brennan still doesn’t want to help. Becky says she’s dead if he doesn’t. He’d rather get help from Adam, but Becky wants this kept quiet. He eventually agrees, but first calls Adam. He spins a story to Adam and Emma about being best man at an old friend’s wedding.
Foster is at his campaign headquarters. He’s telling a man that the election is sewn up. The man says not if the disc goes public. Foster is sure it won’t; Becky will want a payoff. The other is not impressed; he says it’s time to use his goes. Foster seems shaken by the suggestion.
Emma is rummaging through Brennan’s things when Shalimar enters. Emma knows something’s up. Does that give her the right to rifle through Brennan’s stuff? Emma says Brennan was overwhelmed with hurt and resolved emotions. Shalimar thinks that’s enough and starts the computer. Emma recognises Becky and tells Shalimar who she is.
Becky is with Brennan and Connor at an old warehouse they used to use. She wants out of the game and the disc is how. Connor hid it and she needs Brennan to help get it back. She contacts Foster, and the other man is listening in, and asks for $2 million. The other traced the call.
Shalimar and Emma’s are looking at Becky’s history when Jesse and Adam arrive. Jesse has identified that Brennan torched the police car. Adam thinks Brennan is protecting someone.
Foster is now with the other man in a room with several men. The second man uses a remote to activate two. He explains that the people were the most lethal black ops soldiers before they died during classified ops. They are no longer living in the conventional sense. They have limited brain function, controlled through an implant. He orders two to find Becky, get the disc and kill her and anyone else she came into contact with.
Shalimar has found Becky in a newspaper photo with Foster. Adam thinks he recognises the person in the background, the man who was with Foster. Not a friend; a heavyweight in special ops until he went into the private sector and made a fortune in high-tech weaponry.
Brennan and Connor have headed to a restaurant. Connor asks for a quarter, then complains the jukebox is broken. The waitress says it has been for some time. Connor bets his father could fix it. The jukebox is where he did the disc, and it was disabled with a loose wire. Heading back outside, Emma and Shalimar are waiting. Brennan says he can handle things.
Is Brennan really Connor’s father? Given that Becky is continually lying, it seems rather unlikely. Becky is also in over her head, but doesn’t realise this and is still trying to come out ahead.
