“Presumed Guilty” is episode seventeen of season one of Mutant X.
A woman is telling a man that they are heading to see someone called Adam. Her mother knows him. Mutant X is real and can help the man go into the underground where the government’s goons can’t find him. The man doesn’t really want to go to the meet, there is a struggle and, by accident, he knocks the woman, Megan, off where they are walking. Adam arrives at this point and asks what happened, because Megan is dead. The man blames Adam and attacks him. Adam is a better fighter, but the man’s eyes turn black and he draws something out of Adam.
At Sanctuary, Emma asks the others if they’ve seen Adam. He was supposed to meet her in the lab half an hour ago. That doesn’t sound like Adam, and the others wonder where he is.
Adam is still lying where he fell during the struggle. He comes too and sees Megan. Megan’s boyfriend appears with a gun and accuses Adam of killing her. Adam says that isn’t possible, and asks the man who he is. And why he can’t remember what happened. The man claims he hit Adam’s head when he pulled him off Megan. Only Adam’s head doesn’t hurt. It just feels empty. He says he didn’t kill Megan. The other says that will be a hard sell with him as an eyewitness. Great; kill your girlfriend then frame someone else for it. Adam manages to disarm the man and runs.
Eckhart is talking about the man, Mark Griffin. He has the ability to absorb a person’s memory with his gaze. Four of Eckhart’s best agents failed to capture Griffin, as by the time they apprehended him, they forgot why they were there. This week’s minion, Ms. Isley, has a second eyelid that should protect her from that.
Jesse is calling Adam on his commlink, but Adam isn’t responding. Emma was the last to see Adam; he was heading out to meet a Megan Alexander whose boyfriend needed to go into the underground. Emma knows where the meet was and wants to head there; she’s tried searching for Adam from Sanctuary but all she got was a blank. When Emma arrives at the warehouse, she sees the police. Jesse tells her they’ve located Adam’s commlink. Emma sees Megan coming out in a bodybag. Shalimar and Brennan can’t find Adam, even though they are where his commlink signal is coming from. That’s because the only thing there is his commlink. It’s still active because Adam’s blood is on it.
Griffin is leaving the police station when Ms. Isley approaches him. She blows something in his face, so that he can’t see, but Adam knocks her down and grabs Griffin. The police are at Megan’s place and Adam wants help figuring out who he is. Griffin is the only person he knows. Griffin is still insisting Adam killed Megan. Adam doesn’t believe that and he thinks Griffin doesn’t either. Last night, Adam did some research into amnesia and treatments, and he wants Griffin to tell him what’s going on. Adam’s short-term memory still works and he seems to be a good learner. If he killed Megan, why was Griffin the one with the gun? Adam thinks Griffin is a liar, but not a very good one.
Isley is reporting to Eckhart. He wonders why Adam is protecting the man accusing him for murder. Then realises that Griffin may have stolen Adam’s memories. Which means that Adam’s memories are in Griffin’s brain. Eckhart considers this to be an opportunity.
Jesse and Shalimar are at the warehouse where Megan was killed. Shalimar uses her eyesight, revealing an ability she has never shown before, and tracks the fight. The finds Adam’s blood, and someone else’s.
Griffin is claiming he came in to find Adam standing over Megan’s body. That Megan knew him, and Mutant X. Adam still doesn’t believe Griffin. He says Griffin is setting him up for murder; lying, but mixing in enough of the truth to confuse the issue. Which is true. Griffin is leaving, and he doesn’t believe Adam is going to shoot him. Which says something in and of itself.
Adam runs after and Brennan and Emma see him. He doesn’t recognise them. They say they known him and Emma checks inside Adam’s head. The GSA, meanwhile, is taking Griffin. Adam leaves whilst Brennan and Emma’s backs are turned and hands himself in to the police.
Without his memories, Adam doesn’t know who to trust. Something Eckhart believes can be used to his advantage. Not only do the others need to rescue Adam, they also need to get Griffin back, because with Adam’s memories, Griffin has knowledge about the entire Mutant X organisation. Which Eckhart really wants.
