Mutant X – Possibilities

“Possibilities” is episode eleven of season three of Mutant X.

Shalimar is running around Sanctuary with a small notebook of Brennan’s. They look to be on the verge of kissing when Lexa arrives and tells them they got a tip something big is going down. They have to go to Broder Biochem and find a woman, Samantha Bennett, who has information that will save hundreds of lives. Lexa tells Jesse, who has just spat out some milk that has gone off, that they need a floor plan.

At Broder, they split up. Brennan finds Samantha, who recognises him, even though he’s never seen her before. There isn’t time for the rest of the team; Brennan has to do what she says. She hands him a door wedge, then knocks papers out of a woman’s hands as she comes through a secure door. Brennan uses the wedge to keep the door from shutting, then they sneak past a lab.

Samantha is still saying there’s no time; she was being held by security at Loire industries. There’s a bomb guarded by two powerful mutants. They need taking out fast or everyone in the building will die. How does she know? Because it’s already happened. They open a door, and a body slumps out. Inside, they find the bomb and the two mutants. The second one is taken down too late and the bomb explodes.

Brennan looks around in Sanctuary. He’s back when Shalimar had his book. He asks what’s going on, saying they were just at Broder. And tells Jesse not to drink the milk. Jesse spits it out again. How did Brennan know? It happened. There was a bomb and Samantha and Brennan were standing next to it when it went off. Lexa says they have a mission. Yes, hundreds die. Samantha was late; she was being held by security at Loire. Brennan is going to go there. Lexa wants Brennan to wait but the other two give him the benefit of the doubt.

Brennan arrives at Loire and is told he can’t take a package personally to security. He apologises to the man at the desk, then shocks him unconscious. Samantha is fastened to a chair and is working on getting her hands free when Brennan arrives. He takes down a guard but a second enters and shoots him in the arm. Samantha is surprised Brennan remembers; she’ll explain on the way.

Jesse has discovered that Loire is owned by a Lawrence Bosch. Lexa knows the name and says maybe Brennan isn’t crazy. Bosch develops genetically based drugs and has killed hundreds of people during his research. Lexa wants to go, rather than wait around for Brennan, and they do.

Samantha explains to Brennan, whilst dressing his wound, that she can send her consciousness back in time, but only a short distance and it’s never brought anyone else before. Did they die back there? Yes. She’s been trying to stop the bomb from exploding and has tried many different ways. That’s why she contacted the Dominion. But she doesn’t want the rest of Brennan’s team brought in; too many possibilities.

The other three are searching Broder. Shalimar can smell blood. She contacts Brennan who tells her to get to the boardroom. Everyone arrives but, once again, they are not fast enough and the bomb explodes.

And we’re back. Brennan tells the others what happened and takes the milk from Jesse before he can drink it. Lexa wants to go to Broder. Brennan says if they do, they’ll die. Give him a little time. Brennan heads to Loire and this time rescues Samantha without injury. She asks Brennan what took him so long. Brennan wants to bring his team in this time; they tried in Samantha’s way and it didn’t work.

The others are eventually convinced this might be possible. He mentions Bosch; Broder has developed something that would make one of his most profitable drugs obsolete. Brennan explains what happened with the bomb and what he saw to Jesse. He didn’t see much; it was exploding.

Bosch, it seems, is on Lexa’s list of people to stop breathing if they ever met again. Her way of making the world a nicer place. She was on a mission to shut down a research place in South America. 40 dead subjects and some of her team were killed.

Samantha explains to Brennan that she used to work for Bosch. She used her abilities to see what happened when drugs were tested, then went back in time to say so that the tests didn’t need doing. She didn’t enjoy it, but Bosch would have done the tests anyway. At least this way, people didn’t die. Well, didn’t die permanently. Then she heard about the bomb. Enough was enough.

This is, to a large extent, one of those repeat until you get it right episodes. Of course, there is a limiter; the more Samantha does it, the more it weakens her. So, there is an upper limit. Brennan is getting increasingly attached to Samantha and Lexa’s personal feelings regards Bosch are getting in the way.
