“No Exit” is episode nine of season three of Mutant X.
Helicopters are attacking the exterior of Sanctuary and three armed men are inside. Shalimar and Lexa are after the attackers; both sides are armed with energy weapons. Each takes down one attacker then both shoot the third. Who fuzzes out. Shalimar and Lexa head off to get a shower, then stop. The entire thing is a hologram and Shalimar and Lexa are not so happy about the improvements that Jesse has made to the Sanctuary holo system to play Tunnel Quest II. He says he’s modded the game to match their specs. They tell him to delete it. Or Shalimar will break his computer. Jesse does but, after he and Brennan leave, the game reloads.
Shalimar sees someone pass her room and goes to check with Brennan and Jesse. They saw nothing. Lexa turns up and asks Jesse to take a look at the climate control; it’s 80 degrees. Jesse asks Lexa if she tried to override. No; she thought she’d come down and whine about it first. The climate control won’t reset. Jesse says it’s not the game; he wiped it. Shalimar returns; she saw someone again. There are only four heat sources on the monitor. Shalimar wants to do a security sweep anyway and Lexa accompanies. Tunnel Quest II reactivates and Jesse deletes it again.
The security cameras are watching Lexa and Shalimar who haven’t found anyone. Then a circuit overheats and catches fire. Jesse is working on the computer when Brennan shows him that the system has identified a security breach. It’s decided Shalimar and Lexa are intruders. Brennan tells them to head to the Helix which they do. They manage to get out just before the hanger doors close.
Jesse tells Brennan he’s not in control of anything. Brennan asks who is. An artificial voice responds; a man who seems paralysed is in bed in a hospital is watching them. This is his game; he decides who lives or dies.
Shalimar and Lexa contact Brennan and Jesse using the comlinks. Jesse agrees that the game must have infected the computer but he doesn’t know how. The man in the bed severs their communications, then contacts Shalimar and Lexa in Brennan’s voice. He tells them there’s a way to override the system, but it needs doing from the ground. Adam installed a backdoor in an offsite facility. ‘Brennan’ gives them the address. Then the bed-bound man calls 911, saying there are terrorists at the same address.
A nurse enters the hospital room and is talking to the man, complaining that he isn’t responding. When he does, using the artificial voice, it startles her. She wasn’t expecting it. The man manages to get rid of her using the intercom.
Jesse tells Brennan they are cut off. He can’t phase out with the disruption field active. But he thinks he’s sorted the heat. Then one of the holographic soldiers from Tunnel Quest II activates. Brennan checks that holographic weapons can’t hurt them. Not as far as Jesse known. But Brennan winds up pinned to the wall by electricity. The soldier taunts him until Jesse manages to cut the power off.
Shalimar and Lexa arrive at the warehouse that ‘Brennan’ gave them to the address to. Lexa thinks it’s a strange place to build a backdoor. They contact the fake Brennan. Jesse and Brennan, meanwhile, realise the attacker knows everything about them.
The nurse comes back into the man’s room and starts playing with his equipment, telling him she has complete control over his life. If he dies, no-one will ever miss him. He flatlines, she panics, evidently not really wanting to kill him, and grabs the defibrillator paddles. And gets electrocuted by them. The man was faking it.
The person attacking Mutant X is doing so as revenge. He blames them for his paralysation. Even though it’s at least partially his fault. Brennan and Jesse have a problem, because he’s got complete access to the Sanctuary systems and can see everything they’re doing.
