“Interface” is episode sixteen of season one of Mutant X.
Emma is in a shopping mall when she sees a GS agent. He pursues her and she hits him in the face before running. Another agent also appears and she kicks him in the face. Two more appear and corner her, then Shalimar drops in. What follows is a very aggressive use of shopping bags, followed by a discussion as to what they bought.
Brennan and Jesse are in the safe house. The place has been torn apart and three people were taken, although eight escaped. The self-destruct – for the database connection it seems – worked, though. They wonder why the GSA is suddenly so successful at finding their safehouses. Jesse phases through a wall and retrieves a disc from the surveillance system.
Eckhart is speaking to a minion, Mr. Delay (Chris Owens). He’s not exactly happy that four GS agents were taken down by unarmed women. They will be retrained. They are succeeding at shutting down the safehouses, because their secret weapon is working. They just need a means of countermanding the self-destruct devices. A woman, Ms. Bigelow, enters at this point. Their new secret weapon. This appears to be a two-minion episode. She believes that the problem isn’t the training, it’s the trainer. Mr. Delay. She accompanied him on the safehouse raid and the squad demonstrated the same lack of team effort. Eckhart says her telecyber abilities make her a promising recruit. A promise she intends to fulfil. Her ultimate goal? Eckhart’s job. By first taking Mr. Delay’s.
Shalimar is wondering if there’s a mole in the underground. Brennan says his instinct is that it’s an outside source. Emma is watching the security tape and recognises Ms. Bigelow. Or Michelle, as Emma knows her. They went to high school together but lost touch after graduation. Both are New Mutants. Adam and Jesse are talking about how to neutralise the breach. Adam explains telecyber psionics.
Later, Emma is looking through old high school stuff and decides to leave, leaving a message that she’s meeting up with an old friend.
At the GSA, Mr. Delay is approaching Michelle. He isn’t happy that she made him look like an idiot and she doesn’t want him for an enemy. Michelle doesn’t want him for a friend either. Delay doesn’t share Eckhart’s enthusiasm in Michelle, and tells her to watch her back. She counter-threatens him. After Delay leaves, Michelle enters into the computer, then gets a message that she has email. Emma is in a cyber cafe and wants to arrange to see her.
Brennan and Jesse are in the safehouse when a GS agent approaches them. The agent throws down his shock rod, because he’s that confident. Deservedly so, it seems; he manages to take down both Brennan and Jesse, partly because he is a teleporter. This was a simulation, though, and Adam and Shalimar were watching. Which leads into a discussion as to why a sudden surprise attack needs to be both sudden and surprising.
Emma is still in the cafe and is about to leave when Michelle activates a webcam chat. She asks if they are still friends. Back then, they both knew they were different, before they knew anything else. Michelle agrees to a face to face but, after using her powers, is affected rather oddly. That’s probably going to be important later on.
Jesse is talking to Adam about the simulation. Adam says he’s only beaten the simulations when he knew what to expect. He thinks Jesse had trouble with video games as a kid. Jesse still does.
The cyber cafe was where Michelle and Emma used to go when they were at school. They reminisce about what they used to do, which ended up with them slipping out without paying. Michelle says that Eckhart is helping her to achieve her goals. She’s convinced she’s doing the right thing. The two argue over what they are doing. This is the main thread of the story. Jesse is also talking to Adam about how to do better in simulations.
