“In the Presence of Mine Enemies” is episode eight of season one of Mutant X.
Eckhart is in his office and, when he turns away, the Mutant X team move into action. Jesse alters the camera feeds, Shalimar jumps up a wall to open a box and Brennan zaps it. Emma uses her powers to make two guards think they are blind and Shalimar and Brennan knock them out. The whole team arrives at their destination. Then an alarm goes off and the door shuts. This was just a cyber simulation of course.
Jesse is dancing with a young woman in what appears to be an empty cyber cafe. However, Brennan is also there and he asks if either of them are going to give him a hand. He didn’t introduce them so that they could just stare longingly into each other’s eyes. The idea of the woman, Toni, giving up cybercrime to run a coffee shop is also odd. Jesse points out that Brennan isn’t the only one to clean up his act.
Adam is playing poker against Shalimar and chess against Emma. He beats them both. According to Adam, he was using his opponents’ weaknesses against them; Shalimar’s recklessness and Emma’s caution.
Back at the cafe, Brennan asks for a hand and Toni uses what appears to be telekinesis to plug in a bunch of cables. Brennan then zaps the system and the computers come to life. Proxy Blue is talking about sinister men and women chasing mysterious men and women through the streets. There’s a white-haired guy who might be the ringleader. Eckhart is watching this and shouts for a Ms. MacEvoy. Back at the Sanctuary, Adam thinks this from Proxy Blue will drive Eckhart up the wall.
Eckhart is talking to his latest minion, Ms. MacEvoy, about Proxy Blue. Previously, it was no more than an annoyance. Leaks were inevitable but the story won’t go away. MacEvoy says it gets worse. There’s a video and a decent sketch of Eckhart. Eckhart wants to take over Proxy Blue (an impression was given earlier that they already controlled it; presumably not) as it could destroy everything. MacEvoy has an idea.
Jesse and Shalimar are talking at the Sanctuary about the opening weekend of Toni’s cafe; Shalimar is concerned about Jesse getting hurt in the relationship. Jesse appreciates her concern. He gets a call from Toni at that point, who is sending him a photo. With a really slow download speed.
MacEvoy is talking to Eckhart about social engineering, how grifters and political candidates have been using it for years. She suggests destroying Proxy Blue and replacing it with their own version, giving their own spin on things. MacEvoy guarantees she can do it. Well, that was probably not a good idea.
Brennan and Jesse are at Toni’s cafe; Toni has apparently set Brennan up on a blind date with her friend Kendra. Kendra MacEvoy. They apparently met whilst MacEvoy was working at an ad agency. Toni scammed lots of calls out of the company and MacEvoy tracked her down. And hired her as a consultant to make their system uncrackable. Since then, MacEvoy says she has used her New Mutant powers to get a better job – and attacks Brennan. It appears she has super strength. Two GS agents also arrive and they manage to take Toni. Jesse wants to head out after them but Brennan is concerned that Toni might have set them up.
Jesse wants to know what Adam’s plan to save Toni is, but Adam is also cautious. After all, Toni is the one who introduced MacEvoy. Perhaps Eckhart suborned her. Emma arrives and tells them they might have a serious problem. Toni, meanwhile, is a captive of the GSA and MacEvoy is implanting a subdermal governor. MacEvoy claims she is Toni’s friend (the timeline of events of them becoming friends, Toni becoming straight and MacEvoy working for the GSA doesn’t seem to make sense) and Eckhart states MacEvoy did Toni a favour. They want her to crack Proxy Blue.
The problem at the sanctuary is some software that was slipped into the system via a picture file. The one Toni sent to Jesse. Adam thinks they should be fine, but isn’t sure. Emma isn’t convinced that Toni is being sneaky – truthfully, this is the sort of thing someone like Toni would probably have difficulty not doing – but others are not so convinced. Adam does secure the system, but there’s a matching piece of software that will allow the Sanctuary’s location to be pinpointed. Which would be bad.
The other piece of code winds up at the GSA, along with Toni. So, they are going to have to break into the GSA for real. This is not a surprise.
