“In Between” is episode eighteen of season three of Mutant X.
Brennan and Jesse are leaving a place at night; Shalimar and Lexa are still inside. Several bikers decide to attack them and they are fighting when Lexa and Shalimar leave. Shalimar spots someone with a weapon above and cries out a warning. Jesse steps in front of Brennan and masses out. The gun’s projectile phases and still hits him.
At Sanctuary, Lexa introduces a Dr Robinson and takes him to see Jesse. Brennan confirms that Jesse was massed out when he was shot. There seems to be some sort of energy in his flesh. Lexa tells Shalimar that the best thing they can do is find out who did this. Robinson is a telepath and uses her powers to soothe Jesse. The bullet that hit him is packed full of electronics. Jesse, now in less pain, asks what happened. He was shot. With a special kind of bullet. The doctor has to get it out, but can’t use anaesthetic because Jesse is too weak.
Lexa gets a call and the caller asks how Jesse is. And warns her the bullet is full of explosives and he has the detonator. The caller, though they don’t know it, is Dr Harrison, Eckhart’s former minion who managed to survive longer than any other. Harrison has the power to save Jesse. He will call back and let them know what he wants. But any attempt to remove the bullet will kill Jesse. They rush to tell Robinson to stop the operation. The bullet is connected to Jesse’s nervous system and is using his powers against him, massing out. This, if not stopped, will reach his vital organs and eventually kill him.
Shalimar attempts to trace the next call Lexa get. Harrison wants a mutant, still in a pod, who was taken by the military after the collapse of Genomex. He doesn’t know where she is, or he wouldn’t need their help. They have four hours. Maybe less, if the bullet has been activated. After the call, a man tells Harrison that they won’t find her; the Dominion has buried her too deep. Harrison says Mutant X has to try, though. And she’s worth it. Shalimar got multiple locations on the trace.
Robinson needs Brennan to directly connect to Jesse’s mind to help stabilise him. Inside, Brennan appears clinging to a wall with Jesse over what looks like lava. Brennan tells Jesse to think of the good times, and a memory from their past appears. Robinson tells Brennan to come out; this has helped and the massing has stopped increasing.
Brennan checks with Shalimar and Lexa, who can’t find the mutant. Lexa will talk to the Dominion. Adam may have told them they couldn’t trust the Dominion, but the Dominion doesn’t know that and still trust them.
Robinson tells Brennan that an electrical charge could destroy the bullet’s electronics. Brennan uses his powers on Jesse, but has to stop when the massing starts again as the bullet defends itself. Brennan tells Robinson to put him back into Jesse’s mind. Brennan encourages Jesse to remember things and a couple more clips from previous episodes are shown. Yes, this episode is at least partially a clip show. This slows the massing again.
Lexa is speaking to her contact. He is telling her it is impossible; locating a dangerous mutant and deliver her to an unknown operative for an unknown reason. Lexa doesn’t care; Jesse is dying. Her contact suggests she has become overly involved with Mutant X. Lexa asks him what did he expect. He will see what he can do.
Mutant X don’t know who is behind this and Shalimar and Lexa are going to look for the mutant whilst Brennan spends more time in Jesse’s mind, showing him more clips from the past. If Brennan is in Jesse’s mind and Jesse dies, Brennan will as well.
