“Crossroads of the Soul” is episode seven of season two of Mutant X.
Brennan is driving at night in a storm and telling Jesse about this Camaro he’s just bought. Shalimar is rather less than impressed; they are working on something and could have done with Brennan’s help. Brennan says his connection is going and the storm is getting bad, ending the call. Shalimar doesn’t believe him, though the storm is getting worse.
The car suddenly stops going and Brennan steers it to the edge of the road. The lightning appears to strike some sort of forcefield. A lorry is coming and Brennan sees it’s going to hit. He uses his powers to get into the air, the truck ploughs through his car and he is blasted by lightning, through the forcefield. When he comes around, he’s in a bed and a woman is telling him it will be okay.
At Sanctuary, Jesse, Shalimar and Emma are still working on their case. Shalimar says this is a Brennan job, but he’s out in his hot-rod. Jesse tries, and fails, to contact Brennan. Emma hopes Brennan is okay; Shalimar is sure he’s fine. Though Emma believe Brennan would have contacted them. Jesse will run a trace on his commlink.
When Brennan wakes again, the woman introduces herself as Miranda. She has some clothes for him, as his were damaged. She also hands over a folding knife she found in his pocket.
Jesse is filling Adam in on where Jesse last checked in. The nearest place is Edgarstown; that’s where Jesse thinks Brennan would have ended up. Adam says the storm doesn’t explain why they can’t contact Brennan on his commlink. He tells Jesse and the others to head out looking for him. Brennan, meanwhile, is trying to use his commlink. With no luck.
Miranda asks Brennan who he is, as she’s never seen him before. Brennan reminds her that he’s not from around there. Miranda tells him he’s wrong. Brenan wants a phone and is told there’s one at Brady’s store. On the way there, Brennan notices there are no cars. Miranda doesn’t seem to know what a car is. She also introduces him to others with another name.
At the store, one man, Josh, tells Brennan that Miranda is spoken for. She’s his. It looks like there’s going to be trouble, until local law enforcement shows up. The man, Zander, tells Josh he should be elsewhere. He also sees a tattoo on Brennan, which looks to set him back, and asks him questions. The phone is old fashioned and, when Brennan tries to place a call through the operator, is told that exchange doesn’t exist.
Afterwards, Brennan asks Miranda why she introduced him as Ben Gilbert. Because the Gilberts live on the edge of town and haven’t been around in years. People will think Brennan is crazy, if he says he’s from somewhere else. Because there is nowhere else. People can’t get beyond the wall. Brennan asks the obvious question: What wall? On 8th Street. It’s the end of the world.
Brennan heads to look and walks into some sort of forcefield. His powers don’t work – perhaps because of the lightning strike whilst using them and the forcefield? – and he tries running at the forcefield. That really doesn’t work. Miranda says that New Hope is all there is. Brennan says it isn’t. The field may be generated from inside, as you can’t see cars or planes. If he had his powers, he could blast through. It’s not natural; someone put it there. Miranda tells him it’s always been there. Josh and his friends are watching as Brennan kisses Miranda.
The others have checked everywhere in Edgarstown, and no-one has seen Brennan. Shalimar sees a place that sells parts for old cars, and says she will look there in case Brennan stopped for parts.
Josh and a friend head to the Gilbert place, and discover that Brennan isn’t Ben Gilbert. It seems Josh may be descended from the town’s founder, and perhaps the older generation know more about the outside then the younger.
When Shalimar asks at the car place if there have been any accidents, the woman she is talking to acts in a way that seems rather suspicious.
Miranda and Brennan arrive at her home. One of Josh’s friends was inside, and leaves before they get there. It looks like he may have taken something with him.
Jesse, Shalimar and Emma find Brennan’s wrecked car behind the car place. And the truck that hit it, which is operated by said place. Meanwhile, Josh and two friends arrive and pick a fight with Brennan. This does not go well for them. Brennan is falling for Miranda rather quickly.
New Hope seems to be a town that has deliberately cut itself off from the outside world. That often goes wrong.
