“Brother’s Keeper” is episode ten of season three of Mutant X.
Lexa is asking people beneath an overpass if they’ve seen a man in a photo she has. His name is Leo and he may be staying nearby with the girl in the photo. One says Leo is staying in a hotel. Elsewhere, a woman in a room is hit by something. Lexa senses something and comments that they are persistent. Shalimar jumps down. She says she has better things to do on a Friday night. Lexa suggests Shalimar do them. As soon as Lexa tells Shalimar what her secret side missions are. They wouldn’t be secret if she did. Lexa doesn’t have to explain, but if she doesn’t Shalimar will remain. Lexa has been searching for someone for nearly five years. Not Mutant X business. Shalimar hears something. Screaming.
They enter a motel. Shalimar can no longer hear screaming. They are following blood. The trail leads to a room with a bloody handle. Inside, the woman who was struck by something is on the floor, dead. She’s also the girl from Lexa’s photo. Lexa picks up a necklace. Shalimar says if the guy Lexa is after did this, they need to find him. Lexa tells Shalimar to stay away from him.
At Sanctuary, Shalimar tells Brennan and Jesse. She thinks Lexa is scared and in over her head doesn’t know if Lexa is protecting the guy or wants to get to him first. Jesse doesn’t want to let Lexa go alone. Shalimar says Lexa won’t even talk. Brennan suggests stopping asking.
Lexa is taking out some sort of gun when Brennan enters. He tells her she’s handling it wrong; she’s off her game and it’s bad for all of them. Brennan asks about the girl; Lexa never said Leo killed her. Brennan is okay with Lexa keeping her secrets, but two people will find Leo faster than one. Lexa agrees. Brennan saw the necklace Shalimar mentioned and took it, handing it to Shalimar on the way out.
At the motel, Lexa asks about Leo and convinces the clerk to let them see the security footage. The cops have already seen it. Brennan contacts Shalimar and Jesse; nothing on the medallion so far but the dead girl was Candace Rockwell, a mutant. Jesse looks at Candace’s preliminary autopsy. She died from having her liver removed. They wonder what sort of freak they are dealing with.
Organleggers, that’s who. A sick man in a wheelchair buys the liver with a briefcase full of money. One of the two men selling is unhappy that Leo got away; he would be worth much more. The other says Leo is a hard man to track. The first man uses telekinesis to nearly hit the second with a scalpel. The second will look harder.
Lexa and Brennan see a man leaving Candace’s room with bloody hands. Lexa says he’s only violent under extreme physical threat. Rewinding further shows another man leaving the room, presumably the actual killer. Then Lexa and Shalimar arrive, as presumably Leo is leaving. They walk right past him without noticing.
Jesse has got DNA from skin on the medallion. Running it through Adam’s database brings up an ID. Several IDs, in fact. All with the same DNA. All the same person. A mutant whose power turns him into different people with different personalities. The first mutant was Leo Pierce. As in Lexa Pierce. Her twin brother.
Brennan tells Lexa they know who Leo is. If she acts like an outsider, she’ll be treated like one. Why didn’t she tell them? Because Leo is sick and not stable. Sometimes he loses himself and becomes a danger to others. Lexa knows how to handle her brother. They hear a shout and see two men bundling Leo into a car. Both are knocked down and Leo runs off. Lexa shoots him with something.
At Sanctuary, Lexa accuses Brennan of messing things up. He didn’t know she was shooting Leo with a tracker. Lexa hopes Jesse can expand the range. Leo used to change personalities as a kid to get through the day, but lost control and ended up in an institution run by Eckhart. It made him worse. Shalimar has found five other dead mutants, all with one or more organs removed. John Does with no IDs or next of kin. Mutants will have better organs. Leo’s mutation will make him a universal donor.
The man from earlier is told that Leo got away. He seems ill. The other has an image of the gun Lexa used. The first recognises it; Eckhart made it. He wondered what happened to it. He also has a tracker. At Sanctuary, Jesse is working on the tracker. It’s a GSA prototype; Lexa took it when she left. She figured Eckhart owed her a retirement gift. She found Leo through the Dominion; that was part of the bargain. Something Lexa isn’t sharing is that she’s the one who convinced Leo to go to the institution run by Eckhart.
